Re: Disappointed

Don't blame eBay for this.  They had nothing to do with your deal.  It sounds like you fell for a very common scam, for a vehicle that you found on CL, or FB.  Sorry this happened to you.

Re: Disappointed

Buy local where you can see, feel, and drive the car to be safe.

Where did you see the listing for the car?  On eBay?

Or were you told the deal would be handled through eBay from somewhere else?

We hear about these scams regularly on the forums... they generally start on craig's list or facebook marketplace, claiming the transaction will be handled through ebay, and the vehicle is in ebay's "warehouse" waiting to be delivered to the buyer.  It's an old con game, been around for years.  If the vehicle isn't listed on ebay to begin with, it has nothing to do with ebay.  Sorry this happened to you.

Re: Disappointed

Be very careful when buying any high dollar items online like cars, electronics, jewelry, coins, bullion etc.

The biggest clue is when the item is way undervalue.  And that's usually because the item doesn't exist.

Make sure it's a real deal in person.

Watch who you give personal information to as well.  Why would give a perfect stranger personal infor???

Be safe and Best wishes!

Re: Disappointed

@tridaw6235 Anything advertised on Facebook or another marketplace that says eBay will handle the sale is a scam; eBay does not warehouse or ship vehicles. eBay transactions take place on eBay, not off site and not through email.

There is no vehicle (just stolen photos) and the scammer is likely overseas. If you send them money or gift card codes there will be no way to retrieve those funds. When the price looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Here's eBay's page about recognizing and avoiding vehicle scams: https://pages.motors.ebay.com/buy/security/

Report the listing to the venue where you found the fraudulent ad using these links: Facebook Marketplace | Craigslist | OfferUp | Nextdoor

If you received any emails that pretend to be from eBay Motors, forward them to spoof@ebay.com

You can report the scammer to the email provider they used such as Google (Gmail), Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.

Re: Disappointed

Personally, I believe the biggest clue is when you're shopping on another site, not eBay, and the seller assures you that the sale will go through eBay "for your protection".

Re: Disappointed

If you follow ebay rules as buyer you are covered by ebay.

What happened to you was not ebay's fault.

@janet9988

This transaction was not an eBay transaction so will not be "covered by eBay". This transaction was for a vehicle purchased on CL or FBMP.

The rules for eBay's Money Back Guarantee do not apply to vehicles.

Re: Disappointed

I'm so sorry this happened to you.  It must really be disappointing to not be able to see your daughter now.

Just keep in mind for the future, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  If you see a nice vehicle advertised for cheap money on CL or FMP and the "seller" tells you they are being deployed, they are going through a divorce, or whatever reason they give, it's all a lie.  eBay has nothing to do with the transaction.  There is NO vehicle.  It's all a lie.  They will insist on payment through gift cards because there is no way to trace them.   Everything they told you is a lie.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to get back the $800 you sent them.  That's tough for anyone to go through, especially this time of year.

Despite all this, I hope you do have a Merry Christmas, as much as possible, and I hope that something works out that you will get to see your daughter soon.

Exactly...... The OP stated she can't trust ebay. I was pointing out that she can... BUT the rules have to be followed. She did not even USE the ebay site so she can't say it should not be trusted. They are blaming an innocent party.

Report the theft to the FBI at https://www.ic3.gov/   The chances of recovering your money are slim to none, but your input might be that one clue that helps catch the essobee that stole it.
