Fraudulent EBay Gift Card! No resolution DO NOT BUY EBAY GIFT CARDS!!

Purchased a $200 EBay gift card from Walgreens in  May 2024.  Scraped off “safety bar”  on back of card to check balance and make a purchase and it had $0….  Contacted Walgreens and after a lengthy investigation they confirmed the card was activated properly in their store and it was EBay’s problem.  Went through the gauntlet with EBay of copying card, receipt, hand written signature yada yada only to be told “another party was able to use it prior to your attempt”….  EBAY WASHES THEIR HANDS OF THIS FRAUD and offers ZERO resolution.  Why should they?  They already have  my $200 and what difference does it make to them WHO used it.  NEVER PURCHASE GIFT CARDS TO EBAY!!

@cphammer1,

From what you have said, the card you purchased was tampered with before you bought it. Someone had recorded the numbers, then put it back on the rack waiting for someone to buy it and activate. Once it was activated, the scammer was notified that the card was active, and emptied it ASAP.

This is a known problem with all gift cards, it wasn't really eBay's problem. Don't buy gift cards at all, is the best way to avoid this problem. Failing that, don't buy gift cards that are out on a rack, accessible to buyers. Find a store where they keep the gift cards behind a security desk or something.

Hate to hear that crap is still happening and eBay still does sh*t about it.  A few years ago I bought gift cards at Walgreens to pay for something on eBay and I  gave the pin numbers to the "seller/scammer" and that was the last I saw of my money. Didn't know it wasn't supposed to work that way.  Contacted the local Walgreens store,  corporate offices for Walgreens and eBay.  "So sad, too bad" was basically the response I got. Nobody did jack about it! Very bitter pill to swallow; very tough lesson learned. But what goes around...God don't like ugly! I still have that corporate number...if it's any good, lol, because their gift cards sure ain't!!

Just happened to me though the card was not completely drained.  The card had not been tampered with and was sealed in its jacket with the cashier lifting up the flap to scan the UPC barcode and load the card with the amount I requested.  What's odd is that eBay should know who drained the card based on the item purchased and the shipping address.

I was wondering if you still have the card.  I have some questions about the printing of the redemption code.  Was it aligned with the words "Redemption Code:".  Were there 13 digits?  Was it printed directly on the card beneath the coated gray tape?  Was the gray bar enclosed in a green box?  Finally, what did it say on the gray bar before you scratched it off?  Mine said "Scratch lightly" or something to that effect.
