Presidential Dollars

Hey all! I was just wondering what everyone thought about the new Presidential Dollar program and whether or not it will be anything near as popular as the State Quarters.

Hello, I think they are a clever way for the Government to back up it's currency through seigniorage. They won't be as sucsessful as the quarters, because they won't circulate freely.

Re Presidential Dollars

Agreed, along with the fact the Dollar coins won't be packaged/offered in the same way. As I understand it, the Dollar coins are to be issued 1 each quarter, vs. a set of 5 per year. (as the quarters are) I think the mint is just trying to capitalize on the popularity the quarters share. Personally I prefer the paper dollar, I think these new dollars will go into Piggy banks world wide. Too easy to lose them in pocket change. (In my opinion) John

Re Presidential Dollars

Good points. Personally, I like having dollar coins; I think they should mint $2 ones soon. I pick up rolls of them when I can, and use them in vending machines, and for tips. I like stacking them up as a tip, or clunking them into tip jars. I have saved a few Sacagaweas, but not as a set. The Presidential dollars, however, belong in an album, so I'm doing that as they come out.

I think it will be 80% as popular and is a continued way to grow the coin collecting world. Hiedie HO -- Edited by jody526 at 08/05/2007 7:38 AM

Re Presidential Dollars

I think they will be more popular among collectors, but because they won't circulate as freely as the state quarters, they won't be as popular with the general public as the state quarters were when they first came out, but because the state quarters have been widely circulated, the public is starting to loose interest in them because they have become so normalized due to their wide circulation, so in my opinion, the only time when the state quarters were more popular than the Presidential dollars was when the state quarter program first began, as it went on, the public started to loose interest in them because they became money rather than a collectable, the presidential dollars, however, are already seen as a collectable because very few of them are used in circulation and it is unlikely that the public will be jaded from seeing them in circulation, so over the long term, I think the Presidential dollars will become more popular then the state quarters ever were if they aren't already and the state quarters will continue on their slow decline in popularity

I personally like the coins other than what they are made of. The Sacagawea's turned colors shortly after circulation, due to this fact. I'll bet they realized this before we did, yet produced another design of the same material.

Re Presidential Dollars

A tip for dollar coin collectors,go to your local post office, put a twenty dollar bill in the stamp machine and get the lowest purchase on it.You will get susans, sacagawea's and a mix of the presidents coins. It might surprise you what comes out!!

Re Presidential Dollars

I used to get Sacagaweas that way; now it's mostly SBAs that the mint must be trying to get rid of.
