So I shipped an item and it arrived broken. I have no problem refunding for the actual item but am I responsible for the original shipping? Also I don't want the item back because why would I waste money paying for shipping a broken item back to me? The postal service is awful with how they handle packages.
Thanks

The buyer gets a full refund.

Yes...a total refund since...it got broken.
One would say anything can get broken in the mail no matter who it is...not just USPS.
It comes down to packing it so it won't break or maybe not selling items so breakable.
I would be scared to death to ship Christmas tree ornaments in this day and age.

Double boxing would remedy that., but as you say, doing it right (cushioning, zero movement within the box, proper strength box) should eliminate damage. Seal it up, and if you hear any movement open it up and add more filler.

Yes, they get a 100% refund.
You can do a refund without accepting the broken item back.
