Sold an item for $1,200 and sent it with signature required. It's been 10 days since it arrived at the sellers post office and at day 15 it will be returned. The buyer hasn't said anything about changing his mind or wanting to return the item. Is it an automatic refund if the post office returns the item as unclaimed?

No, eBay considers Unclaimed and Return to sender to be Delivered, and the transaction ended.
You can then decide to keep the payment and the item, or refund the buyer less FVF and postage. But wait until the buyer contacts you, as they may wish to pay to have it reshipped.

I would guess that for $1200 if the item is returned the buyer will eventually do a chargeback. So you may want to send a note to them to remind them it's available for pickup.

I sent him one a couple days ago. I will send again at the end of the week and plan on calling the local post office on Saturday if he still hasn't picked it up. It's a town of about 650 people so pretty sure they will know the guy and he has a PO box. I know they won't be able to hold it longer, but maybe they can get notice to him locally.
Thanks to both for the input.

Check the obituaries for the town, for all you know in the meantime he died.

Did you check if the buyer has the package on vacation hold?

So, how did it end up? I am having the same situation.

Hey there @deryk sorry to hear your buyer isn't picking up the expensive item, good thing you had signiture!
Like @azaz_8302 mentioned we would consider it delivered. Once you get it back you can ask the buyer if they want to pay again to ship it out or you can refund minus your shipping. Continue trying to work with the buyer for now, if there are any issues make sure to reach out to CS!

Well, that post was from 10 months ago, so it was too late for OP to hear from you.
My question is what happens if a buyer, who doesn`t pick up his package, files a chargeback?

Yeah, that's why it's better to start a new thread than to revive an old one @beautifulbeauty2012. 😉
If the buyer files a chargeback for non-receipt they will get their money back. Try to not let it get to that point. Below is the standard advice I give out when a package is marked return to sender and on its way back. If the package hasn't been RTS yet, then send the buyer a reminder to pick it up. Sometimes those pickup slips get lost and the buyer might not be aware the package is waiting.
When a package is returned to sender:
You have a few options. You should decide which route you'll be taking and communicate with the buyer, but wait until the item is returned to you before you take any of the following actions.

@wastingtime101
I did start a new thread, but it didn`t get an attention like this one did.
I also sent reminder to pick up the package (as the buyer is in Israel, and I have to babysit every single package sent to Israel, as if I don`t, Israel Post doesn`t let them know that it`s there - the only country I have to always monitor).
So, according to tracking, postal service left a note, then, next day I contacted the buyer saying that it was waiting for him, he replied right away saying nobody called him. Then, a week later Israel Post left second note. He is still not picking it up.
Not sure what is his plans.

The Selling board is much more active so stuff falls off the page a lot quicker over there.

Just got a response from a seller who dealt with that scammer before, wow. I asked if that seller remember dealing with him, and here`s what I got:
Hi there! Oh yes I remember.. it’s actually a she and she is awful. She sent me the wrong address in Israel and it came back to me. I then resent it and paid the shipping again( which was 300.00) when she got the purse she claimed it was too small and wanted a refund. I told her she needs to pay for the additional shipping cost which she wouldn’t do. And it was her mistake in the first place!
She kept the purse and I never got reimbursed for the extra shipping. When I spoke to eBay about it, they told me that I should have never resent the purse after it came back and I should have kept her money for payment because it was her fault. So be careful.. hopefully you haven’t been screwed over yet!!!

Well, that should make up your mind about not reshipping if it's eventually returned to you.
