What do you suggest?

Hi:  I sold a Bluetooth headset on April 3,2018 for $79.99 and shipped the item.  It was brand new.  On April 9, 2018 I received a email from the buyer indicating the item was not new and that the headset was cracked and the base was scratched and the item was used.  I replied that it was new but if it was damaged somehow I would return his money if he sent it back to me.  I asked him to initiate a return request and I would send him a return shipping label.  He did not do that.  It is now April 16, 2018 and I received another email from the buyer.  He said he has done research on this item and that units such as the one I sold him are selling for $30-$40 in used condition. He wants me to sell the item to him for $45.  Should I sell to him for the reduced price or should I ask for photos to prove the item is damaged or?  Your suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Re: What do you suggest?

Was this headset in a sealed box/package?  If not did you post pictures of the actual item from all angles?  If you have the pics study them closely - ask the buyer to send you pictures of the damage.  If he sends you the pics, compare them to yours.....if you feel the buyer is being sincere in his complaint and you're still making money give them the discount.....but I see red flags.

If he makes up an excuse why he can't send you pics I would be suspicious....seems after the purchase he found it cheaper elsewhere and is hassling you to give him a rebate.  If it were me I'd kindly inform them that I can't offer that steep of a discount the best you can do is knock off $10 or insist he send the item back for full refund......If he accepts your counter, figure 10 bucks is close to what you would have paid for his return postage.

Also, another bit of info - maybe the item you sold doesn't have one, but if you ever sell an item with a serial number add that number right in the listing - that way if you get a dispute/return item you can confirm what you get back is what you mailed out.

Re: What do you suggest?

After 20 years in this business, I've heard every story out there.  My ONLY response to any such issue is "return for a full refund".  I do not ever accept partial refunds, as I don't believe the buyer is being honest.  Some of them are being truthful, if so I still want the item back.

Re: What do you suggest?

Amazing how a cracked, damaged headset goes to "oh I'll keep it for a partial refund."  Who would want to keep it when they have the option to get their money back to buy a totally new one?  A liar.

Again, tell him to open a return and you'll send him a label.

Re: What do you suggest?

Don’t do anything. There is a reason he hasn’t opened a return request. He’s a partial refund scammer. Don’t cave in and issue a partial refund, a partial refund won’t fix the allegedly cracked headphones. The headphones aren’t cracked. He is suffering remorse he paid $80 for yours and there are others for half the price. Just ignore him.
