I don’t typically use the US Postal Service (USPS) because of their awful service, prices, and in all honesty, the insurance fraud they commit. Unfortunately, I had no choice but to recently mail a piece using USPS. I chose to use the QR code offered through eBay. Worked like a charm - until, a week later, I received notification from eBay that USPS was charging me an additional $5.75 for the package being over-weight. I called eBay and told them they did not have my permission to withdrawal $5.75 from my account. The postal worker placed the package on the scale, scanned the QR code and accepted the package. Unless they could supply me with the package (which had been mailed a week earlier) and proof it was over-weight they did not have my permission to take money from my account. Karma can be a funny thing - six months ago, on a Sat, I mailed a package (along with a dozen other packages) that should have cost $7.40 to ship. There was an extremely long line behind me at the post office and with 13 packages to mail, I took my receipt with no questions. When I reviewed the receipt I realized they had charged me $21+ for this package. On Monday I went back to the PO and spoke to the clerk who waited on me. He looked at the weight listed on the receipt and agreed it should have totaled $7.40, not $21+. The supervisor came out to speak to me and told me that without the actual box and proof (other than my receipt showing the weight) they would not issue a refund. When I complained he told me to, “Chalk it up to a learning experience” (which he reiterated four times).
I am DONE with USPS - we all should be!

what was the size of the box this item was in?
Such is called dim weight and it can cost more than just the weight of the item: they all use this now days.
Of course such can cost you more if it is checked down the road... you get to pay for it.

I get exemplary service and I never hang around to make sure my stuff is scanned
I am a drop and go at 730am.right into the chute and I am free for the day
the two factors that ebay uses to check your on time performance always looks fine to me.
you can see my dashboard stats below
I realize you are talking about a money problem with shipping but I have not had a cost adjustement for a couple of years

What sort of "proof" would you have accepted? They were, after all, billing you for an underpaid weight, and thus their weighing of the package is that proof. $5.75 is a pretty big disparity, though. Is it possible that you had a regular Priority label on a Flat Rate package, something like that?
Note that while they do weigh the package at Acceptance time, they simply scan the barcode on the pre-paid label for tracking purposes; they do not attempt to verify whether the amount you paid on-line is correct for the weight, dimensions and destination. Does the notice you received state the weight that they measured it to be en route, compared to the weight you declared when buying the label? Does the weight shown on your receipt match the weight you stated?

The receipt does not show the package dimensions, only the weight, and it sounds like in this case that your package exceeded a cubic foot and was billed at dimensional rates. Without seeing the original box, they could not determine if that was the case. Did you use a box of your own, or a USPS box?

Agreed-- dollars to donuts this was a case of dimensional weight being applied.

USPS is a bargain compared to the competition. No complaints here.

You gave USPS permission when you bought the label online and paid with electronic funds. Every carrier has similar terms, it's in the fine print nobody reads.
The postal worker placed the package on the scale, scanned the QR code and accepted the package.
The counter job is to accept the package, physically take possession. Pricing errors are handled later, automatically billed or refunded according to their Automated Package Verification System.

What will be your alternative? USPS has at least a mailbox in every town in the US pick up and delivery.

I have had great service with USPS. I have had several adjustments that were credits. I have had 2 adjustments that cost me a little. the first one I knew about, I packaged a book in a hurry and printed the label for 1 lb. media mail. When I dropped it off at the post office, it was a little over. So I got an adjustment for that. Another was that weird thing if you are right at 1 lb. and it asked you if you rounded up. I was not paying attention and it should have been a 1 lb. priority label, it was right at 1 lb. but I had a first class package label and got an adjustment for that. All the other adjustments were mistakes and I got credited back for them. Mos to fhte time it was a small package taking a ride on a larger package.

I called Hershey and told them that they did not have permission to place green M&Ms in my bag, but they were there and I got a buzz.

Very helpful.

Box was 7” x 4” x 4”.

Box of my own measuring 7” x 4” x 4”. Clerk admitted the system made a mistake. The Supervisor didn’t care.
The proof is the package itself. USPS refused my request for a refund six months ago because I no longer had the pkg in question - it had been mailed. I’m just playing by their rules.
UPS is so much easier and friendly to use. USPS is so antiquated their system doesn’t show the pre-paid label amount, so they back track a week later saying the mailer owes more money. I’ve seen USPS pull some shady deals, but if we’re forced to play by their rules, there are no refunds without the box/pkg.

Box dimensions were 7” x 4” x 4” . I use this size box frequently.

UPS every time it’s possible.
