USPS Shipping Delays

Hi All,

Hope all of you continue to be safe and healthy.

Since new the postmaster general implemented his new policies, are you guys experiencing more issues with your USPS packages?  I'm noticing some of my orders are stuck at my buyer's local distribution center or it goes to my buyers local USPS but then back to the distribution center.  I have several orders that haven't been updated for 5 days or more.

I've opened several missing mail searches without any success.  Do any of you have any tips in how to navigate this?

@Anonymous Is ebay going to extend USPS eta times?  I'm concerned I'll have several INR's on my service metrics that's out of my control.  Is there a way to appeal them as long as I shipped the item out within my advertised handling time?

Trinton moved to a new position.  brian@ebay ping.  We continue to see more and more extended delivery times, it would be helpful if eBay would be proactive and add more days to the expected delivery dates.  It's better to have a happy customer because the order arrived "early" than unhappy customers due to the increasing delays within USPS.

Greetings,

I spoke directly with my USPS location on this issue today. Brought in my receipt HE/USPS issued me a few days ago. The only things moving in the system were Priority or better mail. I'm in Dallas by the way.

He stated, bottom line, first class shipping is the back of the line. Places direct blame on the fact that there is NO OVER time at present with record number of packages.

I, and many other seller have patiently waited for a response from eBay to implement a  program directed to educate buyers of these delays. The delays may not end anytime soon. I know eBay is protecting our our seller level and performance. That is superb and I am thankful for that.

That does not address the issue. Customers and the experience they have on eBay is important to me. There needs to be BOLD statements to educate the buying public to take a breath, you will get your items, there are issues in the shipping chain that are being worked out. There may BE A DELAY in many cases in getting your item.

Something like that. GO PUBLIC with it, get in front of it.

Regards

USPS Shipping Delays

Percentage of delayed packages grew up within the past three weeks drastically. Now, it is about 80% of packages with delays, and about 20% with severe delays (sitting at distribution facilities for 2-4 weeks without any move).

USPS is not going to look for your missing mail, you`ll get an auto message in a month that we looked (sure did), but didn`t find - been there before this "pandemic".

The only thing you can do is to calm your buyers. Some of them have no clue that USPS is not Amazon delivery or other shipping companies, and expect a reasonable delivery time. They also have no clue that USPS gets $18 bln every year from taxpayers money just to be more a storage company than a delivery one.

USPS Shipping Delays

I came looking for this question in forums myself. I have been selling and shipping full time on ebay since 2007, and all of a sudden, the last couple weeks--- a string of delays-- items I've shipped out, and items coming to me, the tracking numbers are just stuck.

Previous to this, there was an occasional problem. percentage wise, maybe 1 out of 75 or 1 out of 100, that I was aware of. But right now, delays, or inexplicable stops in movement--- or right now, a have a few packages that do not even show scanned yet. ( generally, I'm mailing 2 or 3 packages a day). I'm preparing myself to stop for the possibility of using usps.... which is a serious drag because for low value items that weigh a pound or 2, mail is (or was) the way to go.

Yesterday, I dropped off 6 packages at the post office, worth about $350. none have scanned yet, and one of them is a replacement for an item I shipped previously that NEVER EVEN SCANNED. Now my customer on the other end is seeing , again, NO SCAN, 24 hours after I mailed it.....

And..... right when the post office internal memo says-- "Hey, if you can't move all the mail on time, just leave it for later....", our politicians want to make a national election depend on over 100 million mail in ballots........

Nope, regardless of your handling time they use your average fulfillment time.  Therefore I rarely ship in less than 2 days.  I'd certainly like to ship earlier, but I can't because eBay doesn't choose to respect my handling time.

The USPS does not and has never gotten direct subsidies in any amount in any year.

You are probably referring to this Robert Shapiro Sonecon analysis from 2015.

Pretty soon, this will start to hurt eBay revenue. Sales will go down; buyers will lose faith. A real bummer. The post office managed to bring itself from nothingness, to being strong, to where now, it can't even maintain itself, much less build anything. It's what happens when you spend more than you bring in. Funny how that happens.

I have a similar but much older issue that is unrelated to the companies you are purchasing from. I have been searching for a way to contact the Chicago Customs office to figure out why a package has yet arrived after just about three months of shipping. I've loosely kept track of the shipping number and the package's progress through the machine that is international shipping did the lazy thing of asking the provider wherein the process the package was.  They clarified it was in Chicago, which judging by the shipping info it appears correct, at least if I'm reading it the way they are.

They are a Taiwan company for recreational prop guns, often shipping with orange tips to comply with customs regulation. Their original tracking website provided is a Chinese one, the origin point is marked with a filled-in diamond, and other destinations (Whether the package is planned to reach those areas or whether those are points on the flight path are unknown) are marked with hollow diamonds. The last update was at the Chicago Customs office around 05-21-2020, again, if I am reading the tracking site correctly.

USPS Shipping Delays

I've got a buyer who so far is being patient. It's the pits where you pay big money for oversize packages and then they sit for 2 - 4 days at each stop. I've got an inbound package that I can probably expect sometime around Christmas. Why aren't these companies sticking more of their freight on the rail ? It's cheaper than paying drivers and for fuel, and the freight goes coast to coast in about 5 days. I know UPS and FEDEX do it. Why not USPS ?

I cringe when anything I order gets shipped through or anywhere near Chicago, it is a black hole of incompitance and corruption where things dissapear or go into limbo, I'm just thankfull for anything that actually ever arrives at all.

USPS Shipping Delays

Hi, Brian,

isn't it ironic:

I truly understand the grievances concerning the INR issues and why sellers want eBay to step-up and address it in a positive way.

Although I’ve been an eBay member since 2006, I am still just a novice in the technical and programming light of eBay’s system, so please correct me if I state something that isn't correct.

It would seem that the decision that dictates the hits to the sellers’ matrixes and also, in the time line of ship-out and delivered are seal within a grogram, and that program would seem to be seal within a chart of flow. So, it would seem “basically” the complainants are asking eBay to rewrite the program and/or change the flow charts, in some aspect to accommodate a political bonehead decision by an individual that will “most likely” resign within 6 months. And once that happens things will return to normal, and indeed, USPS might return to normal after September the 17th… So I think it’s a good idea to keep in mind what one is asking of eBay, for any major expense to change their system due to the sellers’ dissatisfaction will only induce eBay to inflate their fees, so I’ve been told, many times, here, in this forum.

Now here are a few notes: I have posted here of my disdain for the FVF on shipping, many times, and everyone knows why the FVF on shipping was imposed, so I won’t bother with addressing that. I’ll only state that the true resolve to the issue could’ve been done with a program that separated the sellers actual shipping cost for the items’ sale prices, each month, as long as the sellers use eBay shipping format, thus making it fair for all sellers.

These are a couple of the responding answers I received from those posts; paraphrasing here:

(1) There’s no way eBay can do that, you’re asking them to spend a mint, the cost would be too great and they’ll only increase their fees on the items, and besides, every other selling sites are doing the same.

(2)You just need to change your inventory, get away from the heavy stuff and go with the first-class shipping type items.

There’s nothing fair about the FVF on shipping; and I’ve said this before: who pays more in eBay fees, the sellers whom items are larger and require a ground type ship or the sellers whom items require first-class shipping?

Now, looking at the two above responses isn’t it ironic: the sellers, whom inventory still consists of the larger type items, are merely able to switch to a carrier whom management hasn’t made a bonehead decision. Meanwhile, those whom inventory consists of the smaller first-class shipping type items, are now, crying the blues: isn’t it ironic.

So, with the above said, I tip my hat to the sellers who stuck with what their inventory consisted of, even though they’ve had to pay more in eBay’s fees.

Have a great day.
