USPS Chargebacks on Packages? Anyone else getting these?

All of a sudden, USPS is charging me back on insufficient postage? I sold a writing pen in a 7x4x2" package as I normally do, weighed out at 2oz., even upped the package to 3oz. to be sure of this. They came back and charged me 2lbs, 6oz for the package!

Just had another package on Etsy that weighed out at 10oz, paid for 12oz, and they said that package weighed out at 2-1/2 lbs. What is going on?

Probably automation errors that happened when your package was mistakenly weighed with another package. Done by a machine, not a human.

There is a way to appeal, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Someone should come along with better info. I definitely wouldn't just write it off.

@texasgator7

It is possible that your packages may have been photographed as  attached to other packages while in the sorting process.

In the email which you had received, there should be a phone number to use to appeal these problems.  Call the phone number (you may even be speaking to a human being!) and file official appeals, using the case numbers attached to your email.

In both cases, an investigation will be opened, and you will probably be receiving refunds from USPS in a few days.

Happened to me a few years ago -- refund happened within two days of my appeal.

Good luck!

Sometimes packages cling to each other when passing through the check points @texasgator7 .

What is going on?  Techsociopaths pretending their technology works when it doesn't.

I had this happen years ago on one of my other stores. A 1 ounce package to P.R. was flagged at 1 pound and I was charged. I appealed it, told them they were crazy, but don't know if we ever got a refund. That store shipped 300-400 orders a month from Ebay at the time so we probably just forgot about it. If it's happening over and over again appeal every one of them so they know something's wrong. Good luck.

USPS processes on an average 23.8 packages every day. Most of it is automated. Can you imagine how slow and expensive it would be if they had to do it all by hand.  I have got an occassional adjustment, every time my package piggybacking another package. I have even had a clerk at my local post office bring up the picture. Just appeal the adjustment. Luckily I use Pirate Ship so it is easy.

I drop mine off at the post office - they weigh it there at acceptance & i get a receipt. No rebill later....
