Shipping method change (as requested by an EBay buyer. )

I can’t believe an EBay seller just lost out on a 150.oo sale.     150 dollars is 150 dollars!

From them i requested a different shipping method other than USPS , and the seller refused.
I suggested either UPS shipping or FedEx shipping and I told seller right up front I will cover the upgrade charges.  My note to them was polite .

the seller refused .

i thought about it and thought about it … I figured it was inconvenient for them to travel to a different terminal, however I looked on a map of their town in the United States and there were three FedEx terminals in three different areas if their own town !

i live in a rural area with rough dirt roads and potholes, so there is no USPS delivery service here,

I receive excellent and reliable service to the house by FedEx and by UPS right to my doorstep.
I cannot figure out this particular seller, it says they’ve been selling for 21 years on EBay.

Where is your regular mail delivered? Do you have a PO box address? Why not have the item delivered there.

Maybe your seller, for some reason, was suspicious of your request, impossible to tell.  Did you make this request before actually making the purchase?  And not everyone can "travel to a different terminal".  A friend of mine sells here. does not have a car, does not drive, has USPS pick up her outgoing eBay packages.

There could be multiple reasons.

They may not be able to drive or have access to a vehicle.

They may not want to or be able to leave their house.

USPS picks up, the other carriers do not unless you have a massive volume with them or pay a hefty fee.

They may have had issues in the past where the carrier charged them more afterwards for the label because of an error either by the carrier or the seller and they refuse to use their services.

Most sellers will accommodate a request for a change of carrier, short of using a yak or some shady non heard of carrier.

You looked up where they are located and mentioned that there are three hubs for them to drive to where they can deliver to another carrier, but you also have the same option to drive to your local PO to pick something up?

Ultimately it is the seller's decision and they have decided they only want to use USPS.

I have a USPS location 8 miles from me that I've literally never been in.  I have a USPS location that is 20 miles from me that I've been in 3 or 4 times.  You'd think going to the one further away doesn't make sense.  Except that's the direction I have to go to for taking kids to school.  I never go the other direction.  I also have a ups and fed ex location about 25 miles from me not much further than the USPS I frequent right?  Except it's a different direction that I don't usually ever go.  I can also print a label and have USPS pick stuff up never leaving the house.   That's always the best possibility especially in summer when I'm not taking kids to school.

You're assuming what would still be convenient for the seller when the seller already seems to have determined it wasn't worth it.

Seller has the right to refuse.

They for sure have has to deal with shipping changers before, and by such experience refused you; might also find your self on their blocked bidders list as well.

By the end, the seller probably figured your username was correct.

If a seller downgrades to a slower method, they will get dinged. It's happened to me.

If you look up my "town" you would also find similar results. I, however, do not live in town. I would also have refused your request. USPS carrier picks up my packages. I do not burn gas to make a special trip to town.

Really fairly simple to figure out that the seller probably has already considered his or her options and which ones do and do not work for them.

Last place we lived at in California, the Fed Ex drop off was "in our town".

Ten miles away... closed half the time that we would drive there to make a drop (they were a storage facility)... so if they were short staffed, we would have to wait maybe 15 or 20 minutes until they came back into the office. Some days the office would be closed most of the day or "by appointment".

So I dreaded offering Fed Ex when we lived there.

It is all right for you to inquire IF the seller would be willing to use a different shipping method, but the seller is under NO obligation to do so.  The seller chooses the shipping method.  If the seller includes multiple shipping methods in the listing then you may choose one of the listed shipping methods, but you cannot expect the use of shipping methods which are not listed, no matter how more convenient these methods may be for you

The number of FedEx terminals in the seller’s city/town is irrelevant.  If the seller does not want to use FedEx then the seller does not have to use FedEx.

The buyer does not dictate the conditions of the sale of the item:  the buyer may make a request but, if the seller does not agree to this request and if the buyer still wants to purchase the item, then the buyer must agree to the terms stated in the seller’s listing.  If you do not like the available shipping method(s) stated in the item listing and if the seller does not want to use a different shipping method, then you need to move-on to another item and another seller.

I say this as a buyer — I am not a seller.

It's not a $150 sale if it costs $50 to get it to Fedex/UPS which is could for many reasons.

"...and I told seller right up front I will cover the upgrade charges...."

I can't believe some sellers posting in this thread would not accommodate this buyer.....

I understand some exceptions as to your physical location, but both alternate carriers pickup at your house for a minimal fee (which would be in the 'upgrade' charges)....

I have done this several times and will do it again for a customer....

I am sorry to hear about the shipping issue, I lived in a rural area also and think UPS is the best route for the rural areas. FedEx had been getting better for the rural communities. We may never know or understand the seller decision for declining the sale - there are so many variables that go into a decision by both the buyer and seller. Wishing the best in finding a similar item. And I'll continue to accommodate the buyer shipping requests.
