Seriously, it's been 1 time this entire year that they actually paid out and it was for a lost item.

Seriously, it's been 1 time this entire year that they actually paid out and it was for a lost item. They rarely if ever pay for broken items and are constantly asking for the item to be brought to the post office.... (even when the item isn't in my possession and it's broken - they have actually sent me mail that I never brought the item in even though the buyer did???)
going to start using UPS more and more..

All carriers will decline claims if they think that the packaging was inadequate. Maybe our best strategy would be better packaging.

Insurance does not cover 'damaged' unless you can prove it- which needs to be done by the receiver (buyer) when it's delivered, next day etc. if and only if the box/package is delivered visually damaged (not minor dings/bends in corners.. items are to be protected from that sort of thing).

I have NEVER had a claim denied by USPS. I don't ship very often with them because I ship larger and heavier items most of the time, but it's been my experience that if you provide them with more information than they need when you open the claim (ie images of packaging and damage), they approve the claim. I ship roughly 400 items a month through FedEx across all of my eBay stores. I've found that FedEx isn't quite as easy to deal with but they've eventually approved every claim I've have (which was 3 last year and 2 this year). If you have that much stuff being damaged, I'd reassess your packaging techniques. I have no intention of ever using UPS solely based on the way they throw packages of things I buy on my porch. (FedEx is usually less expensive anyway).
