Seller refunding via echeck? Anything to worry about?

I returned a defective item which I paid for with paypal balance. Two days after the item has been returned I received an email from ebay stating that seller has initiated a refund via echeck. Why would the seller use echeck and not just refund the same way the seller was paid? Is there anything for me to be worried about? I have heard horror stories about e-checks being processed and then later bounce. Would ebay cover me  if something like this were to happen? Just curious as I have never dealt with e-checks.

Your seller already transferred your payment out. Now your seller does not have the balance to cover your refund, and has told PayPal to withdraw your refund from their bank account.

PayPal will make the attempt two times, but if that ultimately fails, you're stuck: Your seller blocked off your option to escalate the case by starting the refund. If for some reason you still want a refund after that, you must contact eBay outside of the case.

If the seller didn’t have any PayPal funds it just refunds as an echeck.   Often this will go off without any issue.  If the seller doesn’t have the funds in the bank it would be more complicated

In the email I received from ebay it says, payment should clear by the 19th. If not, I can open eBay Money Back Guaranteed case against the seller.

Well there it is....the echeck bounced like a rubber ball. Time to give the seller his first Negative and file for a Money Back Guarantee case. All this for $41. What a fool this seller is.

So how does one open this "money back guarantee" case? There is no such an option. Paypal is telling me I'm covered by them and that they will refund me the money and go after the seller. But should I still open some sort of case on eBay?

Paypal will put it back through again. They try twice.

Re: Seller refunding via echeck? Anything to worry about?

He might have blocked off an option to escalate the case on eBay, but paypal will still cover me. He will have a negative balance in his PP account and I would think ebay will restrict his selling abilities. Plus he will get a negative feedback. I just don't understand why he would go this route over such a low amount. Ridiculous!

Exactly, you've been checkmated. Instead, you have to contact eBay outside of the case to force a refund from, and a defect for, the seller; that's the best move.

Re: Seller refunding via echeck? Anything to worry about?

This is interesting. Woke up this morning and had 2 emails from paypal. One email said "credit has been added to your account" and the other said "paypal has replied to my email". I found that weird as I did not send an email to paypal. So I logged into my account and saw that I was given credit in the amount of the pending refund. There was also an email in the inbox from the paypal chat rep that I chatted with a day earlier. He said he decided to give me credit in the amount of the refund and that all is taken care of. Great! But what happens with the pending refund? 99.9% sure it will bounce again and cancel itself out. What if it doesn't bounce?

Since the credit is outside of the pending refund, if the seller doesn't bounce, you will have:

1. A refunded* payment from the seller, and

2. A courtesy refund from PayPal.

*or if it bounces, you can credit card** chargeback for that refund, if that's how it was paid

**otherwise, call eBay to force a defect for the seller, and force a refund
