Seller keeps advising on how the return will make their operational process difficult. They've suggested I give the item away for a $8 refund, or just not return it for a $15 refund. The listing advised they accept returns within 30 days. I feel like I am having to argue just to return my item. Why is this process so complicated??

No need to argue.
If the item is not as they described then open a SNAD case. They will have to refund you in full and pay to get their item back

The process isn't complicated unless you let it be. You don't need to argue, and you don't need to accept a partial refund.
If the seller doesn't make an acceptable offer (it sounds like only a full refund will be acceptable for you), then you will be able to ask eBay to "step in and help" after 5 business days IIRC.Then eBay will either give you a return shipping label, or the refund.

What have you done so far? Are you just emailing, or have you opened a return, and if you've opened a return, what reason did you pick?

WHy are you wanting to return it

What is the sellers return policy. I know you said 30 days but is it free returns? Did the item have free shipping ?
If both of those questions are yes you’ll be out shipping both ways if one of those is yes you’ll be out shipping costs one way.

I worded that correctly to begin with then edited it and now it’s worded incorrectly ugh. It should be if neither of those questions are yes you’ll be out shipping. Too early in the morning
But if the seller does have free returns and free shipping just file a return request for bought wrong item or whatever.
However if the seller doesn’t have free returns or doesn’t have free shipping on the original transaction a partial refund without returning might save you money as well ?

YES THIS IS CORRECT - If the item is not as they described then open a SNAD case. They will have to refund you in full and pay to get their item back ,, DO THIS SEND THE SELLER PICTURES OF THE DAMAGED ITEMS , BOX AND WRAPING , IF THEY INSURED IT THEY MAY BE ABLE TO GET A INSURANCE REFUND ,,,

As Angel has stated, since this is a remorse return, then you need to go by the seller's return policy and do the math unless they offer free returns. If you are responsible for the shipping costs, then the offers by the seller might be the best thing to do. We need to know what their return policy is.
