Seller charged $4.50 for shipping, then sent the item ESUS for less then $1. Am I qrong to think the seller should return some of the excess funds he charged for shipping ?

Shipping includes postage, packaging, time spent going to the post office, etc.
You agreed to the “shipping” when you purchased.

They are required to ship by the method stated in the listing. They can charge what they like, but have to use the carrier and class stated. What was stated in the listing? If they downgraded the shipping from that then there is a legitimate SNAD there. If shipped as promised then maybe that is their way of coming to a total price.

The responders here are correct.
What buyers purchase is for shipping not a shipping label.
It's a common misconception made.
Handling is also combined in the shipping.
So packaging, time, gas, so on.
Some sellers add that into the item price instead of the shipping.
What you need to look at is the total (combined).
If it's fair then buy if you aren't comfortable with it don't.

If the listing said $4.50 for shipping, which you agreed to, then yes, you are wrong thinking the seller should return some of it.

Did the shipping state "Ground Advantage" in the listing? If it did, the seller is cheating the buyer. Buyer should:
1. Ask for a refund and state why
2. If seller refuses, complain to eBay about false advertising on shipping
3. Leave NEGATIVE feedback - well deserved
