Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

So, I shipped a rather large box with UPS to my customer. After weighing and measuring the box, the shipping charges came up to around $223. I only charged the customer around $150, so I was already losing on shipping. I wanted to make sure that I would not be overcharged later, like I had been with Fed Ex a month earlier, so I called and talked to an eBay rep and he told me that UPS will not re-charge after quoting a price. So, after checking on the UPS site to see if the eBay price was correct, I went ahead and purchased the shipment and shipped the item. To my surprise, eBay then charged me a whopping $1,100 a month later for this shipment!!!! So I got totally screwed. I tried to contact eBay a number of ways, and everyone has been stringing me along, saying they opened a UPS dispute, but haven't been able to provide me with a dispute number. And then they just stopped answering my questions altogether. I would never imagine eBay to practice unethical business like this. I understand, now, about the cubic dimensions, but why did I get misquoted in the first place?? Whats the point of the calculator if it will calculate the price incorrectly??? Am thinking about opening a lawsuit if I cannot get any answers soon. Anybody have any advice for me (without being a smart a$$ please)?? Thanks!!

Re: Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

Wow, guess I've been lucky, I see overcharges often from FedEx but it's usually within 5 bucks.  I don't use UPS unless it's through Facebook though so maybe that's why.  I do always round up the sizes and weight, still get charged more often and I'm not really sure why.  I don't ship anything over 30lbs, most I do is 5 laptops at a time which generally runs 18-25lbs.  Doesn't sound like it's worth trying anything heavier, I've seen post like this pretty often and never seen anyone get a resolution.  Guess it's another eBay perk....?   I hope you get some answers!

Re: Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

Same Thing here just got charged almost double on two packages, one was a bass guitar and a normal guitar.

Update says they weighed 35 & 46Lbs! I weighed the boxes in at 11lbs and 13lbs!

What a ripoff UPS/EBAY is in this regard, this should not be legal and is clear deception!

Im 100% looking into a class action attorney who will take these thieves on, literally as Im typing this there is a add from EBAY next to this box that says "knowing your shipping cost is critical to pricing your items and maintaing profit." Yeah thanks ebay how am I suppossed to do that when you lie to us and tell us one price but then let UPS screw us over later?????

Re: Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

I just shipped something small with UPS from the Ebay site and UPS decided to deliver on a Saturday.  I sold the item for $30.00 and UPS charges were more that I sold the item for.  I will only use USPS to ship on Ebay.

That would be because of their dimensions. Any package over a certain size will incur extra charges; for USPS that is 1728 cubic inches. I am not sure what it is for UPS and FedEx but I know they have dimensional weight as well.

As someone else pointed out, once your box is larger, as it would need to be for a guitar, you're into dimensional weight, which is what you were charged for.  When you were printing the label, did you have the box dimensions listed or did you just put the weight in? It's one way I can see you getting a huge overage charge - otherwise you should have gotten a more accurate shipping quote when you printed the label.

That being said, I've had lots of trouble with Fedex lately charging way higher than their original quote - and I am very careful to be sure I get the right dimensions and weight when I print the label. I've had to dispute two different charges since December, and the second one was a nightmare to dispute. I have been using the chat feature for customer service so that I get a copy of the entire conversation emailed to me. It has helped several times when I can refer back to exactly what had been said prior. It finally got me a courtesy refund on the second Fedex overage after 6 weeks of hassle from eBay and them not actually filing the dispute.

Re: Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

Same thing just happened to me shipped big box less than 40 pounds put in measurements weight printed shipping label for 147.00 from eBay after I only charged 79 to customer. Tried to do right thing and take loss and shipped. Shipped on 13 th delivered on 16th then then 5 days later on 21st after delivery without my knowledge UPS adds another 1,200..01  charge Christmas Day and EBay says they can’t stop transaction only dispute it.  I could have flown it myself for a total of 1400 dollars eBay and ups and this was ground transportation . Sick to my stomach selling g **bleep** o. eBay because my teacher salary doesn’t cover cost of living increase now UPS took 1/2 months  of my teachers salary initial 147 plus 1201.00 to drive a framed print from Texas to Arizona weighed less than 40 pounds. Found all this out xmas day after knee surgery. Feel like crawling up into a ball and just giving up. Advice and no mean comments in my end . I just can’t take another beating 4 am and can’t sleep because of this

Don’t give up, but do think about taking down any large items from your listings until you have a better understanding of those surprise shipping fees.

@michellrhode42

If your weight and measurements agree with what UPS says it was then they should NOT charge you extra and I believe eBay will back you up on this.  The problem would come when your measurements/weight do not agree with what UPS found when it was shipped.

I don't know if UPS shows this but on the FedEx site when you enter the tracking number, at the bottom it shows Shipment Facts and under Package Details it shows the weight and measurements that FedEx determined the package to be when it was shipped.  If UPS has this too, compare it with yours to see where the problem is.

I was able to get a significant charge reversed when I was able to prove that the weight FedEx showed was incorrect.  They showed a correct 7x7x7 measurement but an incorrect 85 lb weight which is obviously wrong for that size box holding only one cup and saucer.

Once you find where the problem is file a dispute with eBay and include anything you can to support the weight and measurements you had entered, if possible the actual weight and measurement specifications from documentation on the actual product you sold.

Good luck and please let us know if you get this resolved so we'll know for helping others in the future.

Re: Ridiculous UPS Charges!! What are my OPTIONS??

@michellrhode42

If you are using UPS for shipping, open your own account and don’t use eBay’s account. That way you deal with UPS directly.
When creating a listing, hidden behind a small blue “i” inside a blue circle (information icon), it says the shipping quote is just an estimate and it may need to be adjusted after delivery.

Because you use eBays UPS account when you printed the label, the carrier won’t deal with you. eBay is their customer, not the seller.

eBay may give you a small deduction/refund on that $1000+ but you will have to contact them through Facebook eBay For Business.
I understand people don’t want to go through fb to communicate with eBay, but it is your only hope for a chance at a small refund.

As was already mentioned, until you get this figured out, end your listings for all the big items you have listed. I saw at least 3 other framed artwork listed and a large set of dinnerware that could also be assessed the dimensional weight
