So, I shipped a rather large box with UPS to my customer. After weighing and measuring the box, the shipping charges came up to around $223. I only charged the customer around $150, so I was already losing on shipping. I wanted to make sure that I would not be overcharged later, like I had been with Fed Ex a month earlier, so I called and talked to an eBay rep and he told me that UPS will not re-charge after quoting a price. So, after checking on the UPS site to see if the eBay price was correct, I went ahead and purchased the shipment and shipped the item. To my surprise, eBay then charged me a whopping $1,100 a month later for this shipment!!!! So I got totally screwed. I tried to contact eBay a number of ways, and everyone has been stringing me along, saying they opened a UPS dispute, but haven't been able to provide me with a dispute number. And then they just stopped answering my questions altogether. I would never imagine eBay to practice unethical business like this. I understand, now, about the cubic dimensions, but why did I get misquoted in the first place?? Whats the point of the calculator if it will calculate the price incorrectly??? Am thinking about opening a lawsuit if I cannot get any answers soon. Anybody have any advice for me (without being a smart a$$ please)?? Thanks!!

All the shippers clean your clock with over size and heavy packages. Fedex too has been hitting up shippers with later charges too. Might have to rethink selling those big items.

"Anybody have any advice for me"
Deal directly with UPS.
When dealing with UPS, always give them the extra. If a box is 10 and 1/16", put it down as 11".
If a box weighs 10lb 15 oz, make it 11 lbs.
I am not sure why you got a $1100 adjustment upwards. Did you select the correct shipping service?

Others have stated after months of trying they were never able to get those charges removed. Insane charges like yours for $500-900 more being added on.
It's absolutely brutal to not know how to ship heavy humongous packages.
Truth is do Not.

Yes. I was very careful when inputting measurements and weight. It was a really large box, but I checked on the UPS site before purchasing through eBay.

Yeah its really unfortunate. Its almost a case for a class action suit.

Yeah this is really ridiculous. It was a really large box but only 65 lbs. Its just unfortunate that you put in all the required measurements, they give you a price based on that, and then they hike the price up substantially afterwards. Almost like that is their plan the whole time. I wonder if anyone is planning some kind of class action suit.

It might come to that.... Against ebay.
Most complaints here seem to be for fedex as they are used more thus more sellers get additional charges.
I'm a bit perplexed as I've been shipping FedEx for close to 20 yrs and I guess just know what not to ship.
I truly cant believe your and some other sellers amounts invoiced. Search the boards and possibly connect with them. I dont believe they were able to get fee reduced but again I think it was ebays fedex account. Let us know if anything changes. I hope so.

I don't understand this. If you put in the proper dimensions ad weight the price should be the price. I got with a small $4 extra fee a couple of weeks back from UPS. Never had that happen with FedEx. Had a few small adjustments from USPS. Agree with whoever said round up, that's what they all do.
I think the carrier should be obligated to contact you before they attach any additional charges. They should not be allowed to charge you $1,100 without offering the opportunity to cancel the shipment, providing proof of the new charge, and an explanation of the new charge.
You might try making a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. Companies pay attention to those.

Not with Fedex and UPS. They have tons of surcharges that are only calculated AFTER the package is shipped and delivered.
The price you pay is not always the price you are actually charged.
When you ship using your own account, I believe you can see most of those surcharges. When you ship through Ebay, you can't see them, and it takes sellers by surprise.

"Yes. I was very careful when inputting measurements and weight."
Maybe they shipped it as freight?
I have not had this happen to me... yet. I would love to hear the reason for the increase in cost.

I just had a similar thing happen, while no where near as dramatic as the case that started this thread. I shipped a 40" x 2" x 6" box which weighed less than 3 lbs; had ebay use 3 lbs for shipping calculation. Ebay's estimate for shipping was about $9 and change (which includes the discount from ebay). I got my final shipping charge from UPS today and it was $23.54!
If I go to the UPS website and run a quote for this exact same package going to the same destination, it provides a cost of $16.15
Where the hell did they get off charging me $23.54? The item I sold was only $50 and I got considerably less than $23 from the buyer to cover shipping. I even gave him a discount since I was supposedly getting a better rate through UPS.

If you do a quick search, Fedex has had numerous lawsuits against them for overcharging dating all the way back in 2004 until recently and apparently they are still doing business as normal. I'm not sure about UPS.

This just happened to me! Charged over $1100 after it shipped when the initial charge was $200. Did you ever get this resolved? Thanks

they are complete rip offs
