Over 1 pound-does it have to go Priority Mail?

I have a package that fits in an envelope. It weighs 1 pound 4 ounces. How can I ship it USPS without using a Priority Flat Rate box?

one way is to use any carton/box laying around or get a padded envelope from Traget/Walmart and ship any other way you want. This could include USPS retail Ground. Just make sure the buyer knows this.

Priority Mail postage can be applied to any envelope or box. You don't have to use a flat rate box, or envelope, or even one of the non-flat-rate Priority Mail boxes. The postage cost will be based on the package weight and the distance (Zone).

Why would the seller ship via Retail Ground when they can purchase online Priority Mail postage for less?

Re: Over 1 pound-does it have to go Priority Mail?

It's too heavy for USPS First Class mail.  If it fits in an envelope, you could send it Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope, which is cheaper than any flat rate box. You could also send it Priority Mail using your own box or envelope, which will be cheaper still.  I learned only recently that you can send an envelope priority mail

Here is the eBay shipping calculator to play around with.

And here is a recent thread I started with a similar question about shipping Priority Mail in an envelope.

Good luck!

Re: Over 1 pound-does it have to go Priority Mail?

you can just put it in any plain box you have lying around

I normally ship first class and was very surprised that priority is now 13-14 $ to California from PA

you have  a lot of room for any box you want since the rate you pay for is up to two pounds

Her question was "does it have to go priority. I was saying NO it doesn't have to go priority.

We read the question differently.  She asked how to ship "without using a Priority Flat Rate box" so I suggested alternative ways of using Priority.

Your view is better than mine. Should have paid more attention to it. I will blame my old age for that.

Re: Over 1 pound-does it have to go Priority Mail?

Thank u. I want to keep it in the envelope. But when I put 1 pound 4 ounces it automatically jumps to priority flat rate box. And I don’t want that. How can I ship an envelope at 1 pound 4 ounces?

Re: Over 1 pound-does it have to go Priority Mail?

You should see other Priority Mail options besides the flat rate boxes and envelopes.  You want regular  basic Priority. Be sure that you have entered all 3 of your envelope dimensions as well as weight.  It's OK to just estimate the thickness.
