Is the coast clear for USPS shipping yet?

I shut my store down a month ago due to USPS shipping delays.  It was and is painful.

Can anyone tell me if USPS shipping time is anywhere near the old normal yet?

No were near to normal: still loss in tracking and items.

I'm one of the oddballs who has had no problems with USPS (coming or going), and I use them exclusively. A First Class shipment sent on Tuesday, 1/5, delivered today, 1/8... Tennessee to Texas.

Not to indicate that the USPS doesn't continue to have issues, but we need to segregate early Dec shipments from new shipments.  The backlog has been rough, and I do expect that items in queue first are taking the longest to clear out.  Better for the USPS to deliver new items first, while clearing out backlog, as time is available.  They are already terribly late on some items - best to keep those as terribly late, take care of new items, so that not all of their shipments are red.

That's only true if you think that the proper way to measure performance is to treat a 30-day-late item the same as one that was supposed to arrive yesterday. That is not a rational way to assess performance, creates all sorts of unintended effects, and generally does a disservice to customers.

Tagging on.

1st class white envelope with a forever stamp mailed from Syracuse NY Dec 17th  delivered to Indiana Jan 8th

My new Paypal debit card mailed 12/10   delivered to Indiana 1/07

I have stamp collections mailed to me from Germany,  Poland,  Czech republic that are stranded somewhere.  Some go back to the first week of November.

Christmas card mailed to me from California took 28 days to get to me in Indiana

Might as well take a deep breath and try not to think about it till you absolutely have to.

Everything I have shipped after Christmas has been moving along just fine with delays no worse than a day or two. It's the backlog of stuff from mid-December that's still a problem-- I've still got one in transit from the 18th, no movement since then just yet.

I just checked, and everything I've shipped since the 26th has been delivered with the exception of 3 things I shipped on the 5th, 1 on the 6th and then the 2 I shipped yesterday (that's out of 14 things I've mailed since the 26th). One of the ones from the 5th looks like it's at the buyer's PO and should be delivered tomorrow. I should also note that only two of those were Priority and the rest were First Class. Not bad at all.

The Post Office cannot figure out how First-In-First-Out works. Or do they understand how mail classes work.  To the person that upgrades to Priority, they probably have those packages mixed in Media Mail

Thanks to everyone that replied.  That was very helpful.

What I gathered from this thread was:  USPS is using a last in/first out method to clear the logjam.  The major hubs are still backed up, but there is movement.

I'm going to wait a couple of weeks (not another month) and then put my toes in the water.

There is no point to them doing first-in-first-out at this point. The packages that are late are already late; much better for them to keep the current mail moving along in a timely fashion and then working off the backlog as resources allow rather than creating more backups and causing more late packages.

" Best to keep those as terribly late", really?  Yeah, I'll be sure to tell my buyers thank you for waiting soooooooo long but you don't matter because it's best for new items to be taken care of first. Tell that to all the people looking for medication, checks, etc. Usps shipments should be red because they miss handled the situation from top to bottom. They kept pushing everything back until they ran out of space. The easiest solution was to take care of the new stuff and get to the earlier stuff whenever. Usps knows what going on in the world and they need to be better prepared and better run in the future.

In a word...NO.  I too put my store on vacation because it was too stressful dealing with huge delays, angry and mean messages, and INR cases.  I came back to the same mess, but buyers are a bit more understanding without the urgency of Christmas delivery.  Knock on wood.

It is more efficient for the USPS to use a LIFO approach.  Clearing out the backlog is a pain - and it is better for the average performance of deliveries to deliver new shipments as normal, then address the backlog when resources are available.

I get it - not fun for those of us with late shipments.  Personally, I’d rather have a few older shipments late than have every single delivery affected.  Just my view of the world.

I have 10 packages mix of first class and priority setting and not moving that were mailed 1/04/2021

I had to open for 1 day due to vacation time expired and reset vacation.

I have 3 packages the went from Colorado to Texas  just fine.

I`m staying on vacation until Ebay  ups the time to inter an INR or till USPS gets there act together.

I follow Vintage in active items and sold items, Ebay has dropped from average 32,000,000 active listings to 11,000,000 average active listing listing , telling me there is a lot of sellers on vacation. ( just my thought )

Agreed. I would much rather have everything I'm shipping now arrive mostly on time so I'm just worrying about that one older package instead of all of the stuff I've shipped in the past week.
