Insane shipping adjustment!?

I got a shipping adjustment for over double what I paid initially. I got charged at a 45lb rate for a 20lb item. Can anyone explain what is going on here? The item shipped international.

I didn't box this item as it was already in a box, so my dimensions were spot on. There's no way I was 5 inches off, I'm not blind.

Re: Insane shipping adjustment!?

They don't just increase the price to what it should be (IF your measurements were wrong).
They increase it and charge a penalty as well.
1) Lets say that there was a piece of tape that ran across the top (long dimension), and down the side 5 inches.
IF that piece of tape pulled loose a little bit and the end was lifted up, dangling.  They will pull it on out and measure it.  And ADD 5 inches to that measurement.  They'll do that all over the package if they can.
2) It passed by some bonehead employee that can't measure.
3) It passed by some new employee trying to impress his boss (he's adjusting "everything")
4) It got tangled up on a conveyor belt or something, made an employee mad, and got "adjusted" just because.
5) FedEx drivers are contract.  One has a little bit of a difficult time with something. It's getting adjusted.
6) Package Audits at a particular Hub, or Company wide.  Employees having to measure everything PLUS do their normal job.  Frustrated and just don't care (all sorts of stuff get "adjusted").

Number 6) more than likely right now.   I got Several this morning.  Assume everybody is probably getting a few right now.   This will last for a couple weeks.
We weight and measure WAY big.  Doesn't seem to help at all when FedEx gets on this Adjustment Thing.
Makes one wonder if FedEx just needs some extra money to pay the bills.

Don't bother trying to dispute it.  Waste of time. And time is $$.  (More $$ than you'll ever recoup)

Which dimensions were correct?

Re: Insane shipping adjustment!?

Your dimensions were quite a bit off from what they are claiming it was measured at.

They bill for dimensional weight; since it was a large package, even if it wasn't heavy, it will often be billed comparable to a smaller dimensional, but heavier weight, package.

Also for weight, if it is over 1lb, I always round up to the next pound, since that is how they bill it anyways.

22.01 lbs is billed the same as 22.99 lbs; they will charge for 23 lbs.

Re: Insane shipping adjustment!?

Your package goes by diminsional weight. Diminsional weight with your measurements is 24x36x6 = 5184 cubic inches/139 = 37.29 . So your numbers give you 38 dimensional weight lbs.

Also, any package that's not a "pretty" square or rectangle will probably get an adjustment.
Too much tape also.
This is a fairly recent thing (last year or so).

If I have a BIG package and I measure it and the quote is HIGH HIGH $$ ?  (Say $70)
I'll start deducting an inch on each dimension just to check the price difference.
If an inch drops it down to the MUCH cheaper rate? (Say $30)
I'll ship it that way and say a little prayer.
Usually, if FedEx and UPS are not on their little "check everything" kick.  You can get away with it.
It's how I get even.
