Hi,
I sold a coat on 10/16, it was delivered on 10/23. On 10/24 buyer put in a return, said it was too big. The buyer was instructed to return by last week. It hasn't been returned yet, the return has now been updated for 11/27 return date. Now that's past my 30 return policy. What happens if the buyer does not return the item within my 30 day policy. I do not like accepting things back that have been in someone else's possession for this long.

I would call now and try to get them to close the return, but to answer you question, yes.

You should have called eBay on 10/30 and have them close the return in your favor as the buyer only had 5 days to show that they have sent it back. It sounds like the buyer forgot about it, eBay sent them a reminder and they called for an extension. You can try calling eBay now, but I don't think that will fly as they have already been granted an extension.

I called ebay, you are correct, they have 5 business days after I accept the request to ship the item back to me. Now they have opened a case, is that normal? Why do they need to open a case to close a return that's expired?

Its odd that the return has been extended, that might be why the case. Normally they have 5 days to get it coming back to you, if the tracking shows nothing after 5 days, you can get it closed. If after 30 days (which is in about 3 days for you), the return should close on its own, but you say the return was extended. The only thing I can think of is the buyer called to get it extended. Once its extended, I think you may have to wait. BTW, its not uncommon to get different answers from different people at eBay. I would call tomorrow AM PST (your best chance of getting a US rep and the right answer) and see what they say.

I have actually seen returns get extended before, maybe once or twice. Then they usually close, without action from me. I'm not playing that game anymore. If someone puts in a return, they need to return the item. I'm not waiting for it to expire or max out.
In the situation, I've already gotten a conformation saying the case was closed in my favor. If the buyer try's to leave bad FB, they say it will removed.
Thanks for your help, really appreciate.

Why not just let it time out? Does your money get held on remorse returns?

It didn't time out, it was extended. Now the extension was going past my 30 day return policy. I don't want to accept a return after my return policy expires. No the funds wern't held.

It was extended on it's own? Or did it get extended after you involved ebay?
I would never involve ebay on a buyers remorse return.

It was extended on it's own, or the buyer called in. The buyer was suppossed to return last week, but today I noticed it was extended until the 27th. That would be past my return policy. They put in the return on the 24th. Ebay closed it in my favor.

BTW, buyers remorse returns don't "time out" until 30 business days after it is opened. Not 30 days.

The buyer was supposed to return last week ? For a buyer's remorse return opened on the 24th of October? Where do you see that information? Did you get a message from ebay telling you the return was being extended?
