How long does it take for a cancellation take from beginning to end?

A eBay buyer purchased an item from me in late March and after a few days had passed after receipt of the item, requested to cancel the transaction.  The buyer returned the item and I (seller) initiated the cancellation process on 4/5/2021.  I noticed the refund amount was transferred from of my bank account via PayPal on 4/6/2021 and the amount was transfer for the same amount to the seller.  I assumed the buyer has received the refund by now, but the status (4/8/21) still shows "still pending" on both eBay and PayPal.  What does it take to complete this cancellation?  This is the first time a buyer has asked for a cancellation and refund from me, so I am not experience with this at all.   Thanks for your advice.

This is what I learned so far:  (1) Yes the seller can initiate a cancellation at the buyer's request even when it has been shipped and received by the buyer. It works both ways as the buyer could have initiated a return as well. (2) Make sure you state the buyer requested the return and not selecting due to " not as described" or "defective" to avoid a negative mark against the seller (3) It took 5 days for my PayPal e-check to clear and now the process is complete.  End of story.

Items are never 'cancelled' once they are shipped. They are 'return for refund'. Buyer should open a return, then you refund.

The cancellation is already in progress as I stated.  The refund amount has already been taken out of my bank account and has been issued via PayPal to the buyer as a refund.  The question asked is how long for entire process to be completed.

Depends on how they paid. Usually takes 3-5 business days if it was just going back to their PayPal account. Could take longer if they used a credit or debit card as PayPal will send it to that source.  And. like stainlessenginecovers said, you went about it the wrong way. The buyer should have opened a return.

Will you @gemba-kaizen still owe eBay a second, unfulfilled refund for the completed return?

The refund was taken from your bank account? I didn't think that Paypal allowed that now.  It would take time for the funds to clear your bank and then to go to the buyer's payment source.
