How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

On Nov 17, 2024, I purchased an ebay shipping label using ebay list of shipping services.  I correctly entered the parcel dimensions 30" by 7" by 7" and its weight of 31 oz.

Based on the ebay calculator for the weight, size, and service, I paid $7.15.

This price was advertised on ebay as a discount rate from UPS.

My inexpensive parcel was delivered.

Today I received an update on my ebay shipping label.

ebay message is saying that the UPS charged me an additional $20.70.

(this is a huge "adjustment" for my inexpensive item)

The message from the adjustment link says:

Weight on label:  31.00 OZ (1.94 lb)

Billable weight:                       2.00 LB

Since this adjustment looks like an UPS error, - how do I get my $20.70 back?

Should I call UPS? Will they consider my request?

Should I file an appeal via a UPS site? Which one?

Should I contact ebay customer service?

Should I file a complaint with BBB?

Yes, but that link on ebay site does not lead anywhere - where I can actually submit a claim.

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

Nope. If I plug these same numbers and even 32 inches - the price today is $7.40

They practice fraud.

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

Even today - when I plugged in the numbers - ebay postage, label generating calculator with the same numbers and an even longer (32" box) box says $7.40

The main question is why the ebay calculator says the postage is $7.15 while UPS (later) claims an additional $20?

Is it a glitch or fraud?

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

Problem Soved.

The problem was resolved. eBay sent me the $20.70 refund.

Recommendations based on my experience:

1. ignore talkative "experts" on this board. They will NOT tell you HOW to submit your request for refund. Instead, they will keep repeating the same nonsense about "next time do it right" - telling you how to measure and pack your parcel. Ignore those "helpers".

2. ignore those ebayers who guess "oh, maybe it was the parcel length ... or maybe this or maybe that."

3. You can contact UPS directly, but in my case, UPS sent me an idiotic answer telling me to pack and measure more careful next time.

4. THIS IS HOW:   Contact eBay customer service with a clear message such as "according to UPS the weight on my label was 1.94 lb, but UPS measured 2.0 lb" and UPS added "special handling". However, based on the existing UPS rules, these UPS "findings" are ridiculous.  The shipping of the 1.94 lb and 2.0 lb parcel COST THE SAME, $7 to $8. And no "additional handling " fee (UPS wanted $12.95) for a parcel less than 60". Mine was only 30".  Yes, ebay sent me my $20.70

5. Remember, you have your rights.

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

Congrats, eBay most likely gave you a courtesy refund.

However, that isn't necessarily repeatable.

Based on your post it shows clear misunderstanding how shipping works.

There is no rate difference between 1.94 and 2.0 lb. Your adjustment had nothing to do with the weight.

GL if it happens again and next time eBay doesn't issue you the refund. Hopefully won't be for a larger amount.

@nice.old.man
What's your time worth?    That's what you need to ask before you spend the next 3 to 5 hours trying to get your $20 back.
More than likely, unsuccessfully

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

You are correct, pcobra93

I resolved this issue before the next planned step, but ... from my experience, the best way -- is to make the scam known to the public via Better Business Bureau. It may invite a cl^ss action s^it.

The UPS headquarters will ABSOLUTELY not want their junior mail handlers to continue practicing the overcharging scam when it becomes so obvious and well-recorded on googleable BBB records.

And again, ignore those "talkers" and "helpers" who can't answer a simple question formulated in the original post.  Or, perhaps ... they work for UPS?

P.S. I still like FedEx and UPS.

I used them today, and I will use them in 2025.

Happy New Year

and Peace Be With You !!

"We" are those volunteers who are responding to you and are trying to help you solve the problem.

The people here are sellers and buyers who have lots of experience.

I believe you will not be refunded because of the 30" measurement, it is longer than standard and takes up more room on their truck. It was a light package but it was a large package.

This issue has happened to other sellers in the past and probably the future.

I'm sorry it happened to you.

Edit: congrats on your refund. It is most likely a courtesy refund. But I think that's wonderful.

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

There is NO WAY you can ship 30"x7x7 package for 2 pounds... it should be closer to 9 pounds.

Dimensional weights add surcharges for packages that exceed 12"  and will always cost more.

The charge is valid.  Pay it and save yourself some heartache.

Also- I'd recommend that you go to ups.com and pretend to ship it... it's NOT 2 pounds!

Duh!

My morning started with a new truckload of charming comments.

Are you working for UPS?

What would I do without your help?

After they gave me REFUND for their ridiculous overcharge - should I send their refund back to them? Or give it to Santa?

Re: How do I ask to remove an unfair UPS shipping cost adjustment?

Did you ship your item in a tube or a triangular package? That would explain the $12.95 special handling surcharge as those packages can’t be stacked up with the others without rolling off the pile.

Now I’m sure you’re a real nice old man as your user id suggests, but your views on how things like these are handled nowadays are outdated.

Corporate doesn’t care about what their “juniors” do, the Better Buniness Bureau is a paid business that has no teeth in resolving issues and eBay gave you a courtesy $20 refund because it would have cost more in man hours to argue with you.

But the next time you ship a similar package, you will have no such luck.
