Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

Back in June, I was charged on my invoice about $118 over what the estimated shipping cost was stated. I contacted ebay, they escalated it to the Fedex department and said that if I didn't get a credit on the next one or two invoices, that it was not decided in my favor. I have not received a credit. Is there any way I can appeal this? I basically lost $118 on a small 3 1/2 lb. package to TX. It was one of three that were shipped for the same listing. I have the reference number for the case. Thanks!

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

I really would appreciate some help. Thanks.

Please forgive if some of my info in this thread has contradicted. Dealing with a health issue that affects my thinking sometimes and too much hurry at times too.

To clarify, packages went to AZ, and problematic package dimensions were about 37" x 5" x 5". This package had a Civil War sword in it.

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

This is what shows on my ebay invoice.
Tracking No: 786780738243 Bill Wt: 119.0 LB Sign Svc Amt: $4.50 Freight Amt: $81.28 Fuel Amt: $6.24 Misc 1 Amt: $72.50 Perf Price Disc: $-18.69 Resi Amt: $3.45

Ok.

The Misc Amt shows that they did indeed bill the bogus 66x33x9 dimensions and added the $72.50 OS surcharge.

Based on things you've said, the tracking data, and manually looking up in FedEx service guide:

  • Dimensional weight of a 66x33x9 pkg would be 66x33x9/166 = 118.08 = 119 pounds.
    (matches invoice number)
  • Base rate for 199lb  from 24641 to 85002 (zone 7) FedEx Ground is $81.28
    (matches invoice amount)
  • Fuel SC at 4.50% on $81.28 + $4.50 + $3.45 = $4.02 (doesn't match invoice amt)
    Fuel SC at 4.50% on $81.28 + $4.50 + $3.45 + $72.50 = $7.28 (still doesn't match invoice amt)

Fuel surcharge is normally calculated on base rate + addon surcharges (excluding oversize, additional handling, etc surcharges), and can normally be calculated to the penny, but I have no idea what FedEx did there. Makes no sense. Minor issue in the grand scheme though.

What the above numbers show is that FedEx did indeed mismeasure the package at one of their facilities (they show it as 66x33x9 and 3.5lb) and applied the $72.50 Oversize surcharge to it, but then re-calculated the effective shipped weight (dimensional weight based on the wrong dimensions) to be 119 pounds, and jacked the base rate charge up to $81.28.

$81.28 (base) + $72.50 (OS SC) + $6.24 (Fuel SC) +$4.50 (Ind Sig) +3.45 (Res SC) = $167.97

Your eBay discount shown as $18.69 reduced that total to $149.28

The numbers all mesh (except for the Fuel SC weirdness). Those are the correct charges for a 66x33x9 package. The problem is that your package wasn't that size.

You were overcharged and need to keep on eBay and FedEx and get a refund. Hopefully Trinton can help you get some resolution.

PS. It's not even physically possible to have an 32ECT (and much less a 200#) corrugated box that's 66x33x9 weigh 3.5 pounds (FedEx's measurements from the FedEx tracking info).

A 66x33x9 box is a bit over 43 sq ft of cardboard. 32ECT corrugated is approx 1.66oz per sq ft.

So, that 43 square foot box would weigh a minimum of 4.48 pounds (based on thin, very dried out 32ECT cardboard I measured) Even if the box were empty but filled with helium (ideal case ignoring weight of a liner membrane),  that 11.34 cu-ft volume of helium could provide only a max 12oz of lift)

FedEx's assertion that it was 66x33x9 is completely ridiculous.

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

Thank you for doing all that thinking for me! So should I wait for Trinton's help or call ebay again? Just not sure what my next step should be.

FedEx charges for pick ups and I would think charges a lot for rural route. Maybe that comes into play here as that should be billed separately on your invoice and you haven't mentioned it. I assume you're in a home and not in a business location.

I just text the guys, and they pickup. I'm never charged for it.

If you have time on your hands, I would go ahead and call. If Trinton hasn't reached out to you here or via PM, I can try one more way of reaching him, he's a busy guy so he may not have seen the tag here yet 🙂

Interesting.

I guess I have to get more Christmas presents.  🙂

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

I called ebay. I'm told I should have the funds credited to my account within the next 4-5 business days. So, Lord willing, it will happen!:)

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

A long while ago, when I tried to schedule a pickup via Fedex by phone, the representative told me they don't do pickups for Home Delivery in my area. Well, the closest drop off is quite far away. I mentioned it to the Fedex guy when he came by. He gave me his phone number. That's how it started.:)

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

Excellent. Glad progress is being made towards getting your $100 back.

Please let us know how it turns out.

Getting these FedEx over-billing issues rectified is a totally gray area, and it's good for everyone to know what might work today.

If you do happen to have to talk to FedEx about this again, find out what they have to say about the erroneous dimensions they came up with. Curious if their answer is "don't know - equipment makes mistakes on occasion", or if it's "yeah, we know, there is this a know problem that happens a lot because..."

I mentioned the situation to one of the pickup guys. All he said he could suggest was to call Fedex.

Re: Fedex Overcharge not Credited - What to Do?

I figured that, but just wondering what FedEx CS rep or a FedEx CS supervisor might have had to say about it other than "we can't do anything".

Once in a while a company will admit there is a problem and actually provide a reasonable explanation for what happened if you can talk to someone not reading off a script who actually knows what is going on (supervisors, engineers, etc). It's rare, but it can happen 🙂

Trying to get to that person would be the problem, I guess.

Thanks for the tag @missjen831, and sorry for the delay.

Glad to hear that a FedEx dispute got filed by CS - that was definitely the appropriate course of action in this situation. I do want to step in and clarify a few things. FedEx will review the dispute request in 4-14 days and either approve or deny. If approved, you will see the credit within two invoices (usually sooner). Thanks!
