Did you mean:

Billable weight

I know it's been discussed thoroughly but I just don't understand. Every time I ship a larger, lighter package I get dinged for a label adjustment. On 2 recent shipments I've used the billable weight formula and still got dinged for the adjustment. Im a toolmaker by trade so yes I know how to measure and yes I know how to calculate the weight and round up. What am I missing?

Re: Billable weight

What shipper are you using? I know FedEx can add surcharges after the fact. And USPS can charge an oversize surcharge when it goes over a certain number of inches. Cash grab if you ask me.

Re: Billable weight

USPS for bigger, heavier stuff is out. Way too expensive. Ive been dinged for label adjustments from both UPS and Fedex....It is just a cash grab. The "estimated" label price they both give is **bleep**. Give me the actual label price right then and there.

Re: Billable weight

There is no such thing as "dimensional" weight charges after the fact....that is EXCUSE for the fraud FedEx and UPS commit (that Ebay allows). We put in the weight AND dimensions in to their calculator so if there is any issue, it is on them alone. Just make sure you always get drop off receipts WITH THE WEIGHT SHOWN at UPS and FedEx (Yes, they can do it so don't let them tell you that cannot as they like to do) and fight every one of these with Ebay. DO not get off the phone with Ebay until they credit your account or provide specific proof you made an error ("dimensional" weight is NOT and error).

USPS is a "common" delivery service, with forgiving rules.  FedEx and UPS are designed around business delivery, and they assume the shipper is trained in using their services - their rules are much more complex and stringent.

eBay cannot give an actual label price because there are more pricing variables with UPS and FedEx than just weight and dimension.

  • What is the shape of the package?  Not a rectangular box, then surcharge.
  • What is the material of the package, and what is being used to seal it?    Not cardboard and standard packing tape, then surcharge.
  • What is the type of destination if a business shipping service?  Not a business, then surcharge.
  • How far from a regular route is the destination?  Out in the middle of nowhere, then surcharge.
  • Is the address incomplete, have a typo, or going to a PO Box?  Then surcharge.
  • Is this a week with high fuel costs?  Then surcharge.
  • Is this a special, busy time of the year?  Then surcharge.

On the other hand, eBay also chooses not to factor in (a) oversize charges and (b) declared value charges for FedEx and UPS packages, even though eBay could include these in the estimate (they do oversize charges for USPS).

I think eBay just assumes that it is the shipper's responsibility to know all the shipping rules for FedEx and UPS.

Re: Billable weight

USPS also issues weight adjustments. Got one the other day.
