An observation on the current shipping crisis

What is so irksome to me about this worst-sliggishness-ever USPS Christmas season is how facilities don't appear to be moving packages in the order they were received. Now, I can't assess that on items I've ORDERED, but items that people have ordered FROM me, I can compare with a huge sample number, because they all go through the same 2 first steps: acceptance from me, and then acceptance at the main distribution hub in my city. I'm seeing many packages getting stuck there, while others that I shipped LATER moving right along. It's like once a bin gets a huge dump of packages, they only grab from the top, and keep doing it that way regardless of more dumps on top, to hell with the packages that have been at the bottom for days. Oh, and for some reason lots of packages aren't even getting their first acceptance scan, even ones that I HEARD my mailman scan on my porch when he picked them up!

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

I usually have packages picked up from my house as I ship usually a hundred items each week. The biggest problem I’m having is my carrier doesn’t seem to scan my packages. I sent out items right after thanksgiving and some packages wasn’t scanned until almost two weeks later in their destination city. It’s been a stressful couple of weeks to say the least.

Thought same exact thing...Packages shipped out Dec 10th already delivered to West coast zip codes from OH, packages shipped out Dec 3rd within same state (literally an hour drive from my location)- no scans other than the first post office scan.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

Do you use a SCAN sheet?  Your carrier just has to scan this sheet w/ the one bar code that includes all your packages when done through bulk shipping.  With the scan sheet you are covered as to when you shipped out the package.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

I dropped 7 packages off at the post office 10 days ago (in the package drop box) and the system still shows they were not received.

On another occasion, it took about 7 days for the item to show up as being received, and then it was 45 minutes away from me at the local sorting center.

I usually drop all my packages off in a nearby blue box - but I'm having better luck getting them initially scanned if the post person picks them up from my house.

Ebay is saying they will support buyers if tracking shows the post office received the item - but what if there is a huge delay in the initial scan?  I had a buyer open a case because they haven't received their item, but there was never an initial scan - so I have no real proof that I ever mailed it.  I opened a case with the USPS but it was closed one day later.  Got an automated message that the item has not been received yet.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

When Covid hit, I started scheduling pick ups for the first time (I used to bring them to the PO myself) but when I started doing pick ups, at first, they picked them up and brought them to the PO and they sat there, sometimes a week without being scanned....  I complained... my Post Master told my mailman to scan them when he picks them up from my house.  Still, now they pick them up and scan them, but they don't always get scanned every stop on the way..  There is a combo of overload of packages, laziness, and shorthandedness that is causing packages to not be scanned as quickly as they usually are... for me, as long as they are scanned when they are delivered, I'm good....

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

I'm sorry that people are having trouble getting their items . But it's just such a mess right now. I'll post  a couple pictures from my phone but they will be posted from another ID. Apparently the phone app is stuck on a different ID for me LOL an old one I haven't used for years but I don't have time to mess with CS right now. They will be of my Jeep  before I leave for the mailroute on almost a every day occurance now.

It's not true that only the top of a bin gets sorted like some have stated. The bins are dumped on a conveyer belt  so there isn't any "only the top" thing going on. A rare behind the scenes look at USPS during the holidays - Bing video This video is from last year. I would say that we are on avarage getting 3 to 4 times as many packages as we did last year (and it has been this way for over 8  months now).  Also we are in some offices and sorting centers down up to 25% of workers due to covid.

..... same day as other pictures  this is what I couldn't fit in the Jeep and had to leave notices for.

I took these to send too our POOM, requesting a postal van for my route. (yeah I know its not going to happen) I feel that with package volume its just not safe to be driving like this.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

So we currently have 38 packages that still have not been delivered...they were mailed anywhere from Dec 2-12.  We closed down our store for a few days, then I changed things up a little.  We normally offer free shipping VIA USPS.  I will not be using USPS until after Jan 1 I think.  So what we did was offered only UPS and FedEx delivery, customer pays, however, I put in a "Buy $50 or more and get free shipping" promotion.  This way, I lose about $3 on avg per sale but I'm still in the green.  Our buys have definately gone down, but its better than closing the store.  I just have a great fear I'm going to loose hundreds of dollars refunding people for these late/lost packages that will eventually arrive at their homes.

Since as a mail carrier this is the busy season, I always stop listing in early November. This year I quit during the first wave of covid.  Our B&M had to close for a time but the owner did Facebook Live every couple days and curbside pick-up. I think it has actually helped because since reopening sales have been up dramatically. She still posts on Facebook each week and we still do curbside and a small amount of shipping along with in store sales. As it is a converted bowling alley there is plenty of room (29,000 sq ft) to social distance.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

@gurlcat, and others,

You all may notice in one of the photos @lja440  posted, the pile of packages that will not fit in her vehicle sitting on the floor at the P.O., that all of them are oversized ones.   The other day I was speaking to the postmaster of one hub facility trying to track a package, mailed on Nov. 8.  she told me the volume of oversized packages have caused them to concentrate on the ones that can be scanned through the machines first. Then the order is  Priority 2 day, Priority, 1st Class packages then the oversized packages as time allows. My carrier has told me our postmaster will be sending out trucks this weekend that will only be carrying the oversize packages as well, some of which are personal vehicles that will meet carriers along their routes to pick up any outgoing they have and then give them more to be delivered on the rest of their route as space allows. I think they are trying but the unprecedented volume of online shopping this year along with Covid issues causing re-routing is more than they can handle.

As for those saying UPS is doing a better job.  All I can do is laugh.  Our neighborhood face book page has a new section now for mis-delivered packages.  Most of which are UPS and FedEx ones.

Re: An observation on the current shipping crisis

Want to see a scary image?  ebay search "USPS sorting facility"   (image 3 from reddit).   kind of a leaked photo.

Also trucker neighbor sat and slept in his truck 2 days to be able just to drop his trailer at the regional sorting center to me.   i didnt say get unloaded..... just to drop his trailer - 2 days.  So stuff isnt even inside the building.  they are just storing and and sending trailers to yards to sit.

It's real bad.

I did do 2 package intercepts ($15 each + shipping)  ill count that expense and return shipping a an expense and deduct the refund from revenue.  It sucks to lose shipping twice +$15.  but for a 200 item its the lesser loss.  And the second was out of principlal to the buyer who thought he'd get his $ and the item - new scam.

Just buy as much as possible.  Once late for priority file ebay claim.  7 days ebay closes in favor of buyer and refunds them from seller.  Cant appeal, and cant file claim with USPS.  so seller get item and refund or minimum they get their money back.  Ebay at it's finest.

This actually fits with what I've been seeing. Most of what I've been shipping is small stuff, and so far my packages seem to be moving along fairly quickly for the most part. Out of 11 that I shipped between Dec 7-10, only three are still in transit (all ones shipped on the 10th). The rest have all been delivered already.
