What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

I notice I have been given a "handle", "Adventurer" under my username.

I am NOT an adventurer.

I'm an adult, not a nickname hound.

I object to the uninvited assignation.

What gives with this cutesy add-on?

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

Yes, seems like the Millennials are implementing and managing things now.  This might be why many eBay Members using IE or Firefox can't access the eBay Homepage since last week.

I was an "Adventurer" a couple of weeks ago, a "Scout" last week, and now a "Thrill-Seeker."  Sadly the Thrill is gone on eBay and instead of Buying Items (as I frequently did) or Selling Items (which I wanted to start doing), I'm spending all of my time on eBay Seeking answers to many Technical Issues and recent problems.  I'm also trying to help the Community, and have been raising issues here and within eBay.

I am a "Trailblazer".  Don't know or care why they came up with the titles.  Just ignore them.  Nothing to get worked up about.  It doesn't have an impact on your buying or selling in any way, shape, or form.

The participation "cutsie name/handle/ranking" based on community postings has been around for quite some time.

You can ignore it. If you don't like what you are rated at/named, as you post it will continue to change. It may never change to something that you like.

Ebays "handle" would be Micro-manager

The linked page is helpful but it doesn't explain why on earth eBay thought that the whole concept of cutesy ranks titles was a good idea. The only posts I've ever seen that support or defend these have come from eBay staff.

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

As I posted earlier, I think it's a Millennial thing and originated from the "video game experience".

I think "branding" users is a bit childish.  Since many are reporting they don't like it, maybe eBay should provide an opt-out.

I love my handle name /badge and wear it with pride. It was a very thoughtful concept that started here a few years ago. Come on, have some fun and have some imagination on here.

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

The awarding of performance "handles" to eBayer commenter's names is a sad gratuitous gesture at the not-so-subtly encouraging competition to gain status among contributors. This is puzzling and diminishing. It's Kid Stuff,  painfully irrelevant and embarrassing to the level of thoughtful discourse on eBay discussions.
I don't want to be introduced and defined, as a contributor, with some 1970's CB truckers handle with all if the bad baggage that accompanies such a reference.
I'm a person, not an "Explorer" or whatever the other strange names signify.
After contributing here for 21 years, I'm embarrassed to be quoted under such childish window-dressings and therefore will stop posting to this poorly conceived facelift.
I'm out.

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

Fully agree, especially regarding the intent to make this competitive, which takes a lot away from the purpose of the Boards (to be helpful and assist with eBay member concerns).

I've only been posting here for a few weeks (after many serious concerns and Technical Issues) and what I'm seeing are numerous posters who use this Forum:

  1. To reply to as many posts as possible to rise to the top (they often repeat what others already suggested).
  2. Members who post random thoughts and use the platform more for social media purposes.
  3. And some who post negative comments towards others who are trying to help.

I'm posting about just a few topics of concern, with the hopes that the issues will gain more visibility and be resolved.  And I'm also escalating issues and will be escalating further, outside of Community Boards.

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

We have hated this since it started.

I don't want a name I don't have a choice in.

Feels like being 6 years old and being a "minnow" in swimming class.

Its childish.

With ebay, sometimes it seems they do things just to be irritating.

Just don't get it.

Re: What's With The Unwanted Sub-Head Under My Username?

Six years ago when eBay was planning the transfer of the discussion boards to the current management (Lithium), the director of Community at that time, Jeff Terrell, hosted a meeting with representative active board members from around the country  to discuss various board options.   All concepts related to "gamification" such as point systems and these silly nicknames were soundly discouraged despite Jeff's finding them appealing. members at the meeting informed Jeff that if he HAD to have the nicknames, at least the hierarchy of titles should be relevant and transparent. So when Lithium first took over, there were no nicknames.  But then Jeff moved on to greener pastures and apparently forgot to leave his notes about that meeting for his successor to read.
