I am seeing a question that I can answer but there is no field to put in my answer. Searching finds various posts about this but every one of them gets an Archived response. Am I missing some setting?

I doubt anyone here will investigate such an open-ended question you unless you provide a link to the thread in question.

It happens to me sometimes - never sure if I'm not logged in from the browser or what - I don't spend much time thinking about however.

Agreed. We don't even know if the problem was on these boards or on the UK boards.

Not really open ended, I was trying to find out if this is a known issue and the reply from deltilogical suggests it is.
The thread is at https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Member-To-Member-Support/Royal-Mail-Tracked-24-amp-48-Drop-off/m-p/7...
I see a reply option here, obviously, but not in the thread above.

Could it be that's because that is UK post on the UK boards and you are logged in the the US boards?
If I go to the UK boards I am unable to reply to any of the posts there.

Without seeing the thread, we have almost no information to go on and we are operating in the dark.
For example, I could have spent time here on the US board trying to replicate your issue.
But now that you have provided the thread I see it is on the UK board, not here on the US board where you posted.
When I go to that thread I cannot reply, but I think that is because I am not logged in there and I do not have an account set up there.
It might help if you asked on the UK board instead.

I was on the UK site when I moved to the Community. The question was UK specific and is in the UK board.
I'm not sure how I got the dot com Community for this post.

Log out. Log in again to the UK boards. Post to the Technical Issues board there if you can.

That thread is on the Member-to-Member-Support board, on the eBay UK community.
The threads on that board can only be answered by a group of experienced responders, who have been invited to do so and have accepted. Here on eBay USA, they are called Mentors, but I don't know what they call them on eBay UK. You can start a thread on that board, and you would be able to respond to any threads that you started there, but not to other threads unless you are asked to become a member of that group.

It's not a glitch, just how that board is supposed to work.
Most of the other boards there will be open access, like this one. For a postage question, you could ask your own question on this board, and anyone would be able to join the discussion:

Where am I going wrong please?
I enter https://www.ebay.co.uk in the browser.
I can see I am logged in with my email address.
I scroll to the bottom of the page where I see the UK flag.
I click Discussion Boards
That goes to https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Discussion/ct-p/13
The page shows I am on the UK Discussion Board
I find the post at https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Member-To-Member-Support/Royal-Mail-Tracked-24-amp-48-Drop-off/m-p/7...
There is no box in which I can reply.

I told you, that board is restricted access, unlike most of the boards. Only experienced members who have been invited to do so, and accepted, are allowed to answer on that board.
If you had started a thread yourself on that board, you would be able to reply to your own thread, but you can't respond to another member's thread unless you are a member of the group that has been invited to reply on that board.

Firstly my apologies for missing that, your post came through with many others.
I have just ended a long conversation with eBay and we found that some replies in the UK board have the Reply button and some do not. The eBay agent found the same issue with the same post that started this.
I was told that means the poster has turned off replies. That seems odd for an unanswered question so I have put that down to them finding the answer somewhere and not needing a reply.
I don't recall being told I can answer posts but it seems I can.

Posters do not have the ability to "turn off" replies to the threads they start.
The CSR had no clue and gave you the first thing that popped into her/his head. The badly-trained, over-worked, under-paid call center CSRs do that when faced with anything that is not on one of their prepared scripts. It gets the caller off the phone, so they can take the next call to meet their quotas.
Lacemaker posted the correct answer.

OK but if it is correct that only invited people can reply in the UK board, how is it I can reply to some of the posts?
