I have been replying to posts for years here. Today I noticed one post with replies blocked to the OP and people who had responded. I didn't know that was possible. I did see a grayed-out statement to my ID here that stated something like I cannot reply due to not updating my email address or you are not authorized to reply to this post. What's up with that? I have had no restrictions here for some time and cannot find any in my messages. So, is there a way to post a new message and block replies or ? Thanks!

I see now that the thread shows "READ ONLY". That's strange. Why would someone post a thread READ ONLY? I didn't know that was possible, yet many have replied to it.

Because the person can click on "report an item" and type in the box saying they want no further replies. At that point the administrator can change the original post to not allow any more replies. It usually happens when the OP does not like the answers they are receiving. It has been that way for years. It also works when reporting older topics.

The 'read only' occurs when a mod has closed a necro thread or at op's request.

If you saw that here in the Selling group, then it sounds like the moderator locked the thread for whatever reason.
If you were in the Mentors group at the time, that group only allows replies from designated mentors; all others are blocked from posting a reply.

Thanks, I was looking for the same problem.
But why does someone ask a question while they restrict who can answer to it?
It doesn't make any sense to me!

Well, the Mentors group is intended for guidance from experts, so you need to be invited and approved as a Mentor before you can post replies. I am not a Mentor myself (and don't read the Mentors group all that often), but I imagine it cuts way down on trolling and wrong responses. It's sort of like talking to Customer Service but with a higher percentage of right answers. 😁

Yes it sounds right 😁
