I have a 12 lb. package from NJ to CO. ( its a big box--not huge--just big)
that is $88 to ship via UPS
and $55 via USPS.
Is that right??
am i going to have to lose money on this??
item sold for $114 with free shipping.
its worth alot more....
I had no idea that it would cost so much to ship..

The FR large box is a smidge bigger than the medium FR box. Standard box, not the flatter one. You can get the FR large where all the other FR stuff is at the PO. Sometimes it's locked in the room where the postal workers take packages, sometimes it's at a stand alone kisok by the PO boxes (if the PO is closed for accepting packages or pick ups) or the PO has both stocked if they have PO boxes. I have rarely used this size to ship. I have the best luck with the flatter med FR box.
I think there's a variation on the large FR, maybe more like the med flatter FR, but I've never seen them supplied at the PO, I think you have to order them like the Padded FR envelope.

Best thing in these situations is to play around with the dimensions in the calculator or before you print the label to find the sweet spot. Sometimes 1" can be enough to push the package up in price significantly. I often shave boxes (cut the top off and slide it down) to save tons of money on shipping. This only applies to boxes that are large, usually larger than 12x12x12
Also, from what I've experienced shipping large/heavy items, never ship them using free shipping unless you use flat rate or if the item price is large enough to eat the cost. There is too many variables based on location for large packages, ship next door and it may only cost $15, ship across the country and it may cost $60. These variations are hard to work into your overall price so it's best to just use calculated shipping. This will make it less likely someone across the country will buy something large/heavy from you but you'll also never lose money on shipping. An added benefit is you're paying less in FvF if someone closer to you buys it.

There is zero way to get an accurate answer until this question is answered.
I shall now retire to await the requested response.

All flat rate supplies are free.
They are indeed; I assume that the reference to "buying" a Flat Rate Large box was including the cost of actually mailing it. However, if the OP is already getting burned by what appears to be balloon charges, I think it's a safe bet that the item probably wouldn't fit in the Flat Rate box anyway.
@def.a.posting.id: Without your responding with the actual dimensions of your package here, there's not a lot more advice that we can offer.

Everytime you ship a large item more than 12" , box it up first. Figure the exact weight with packing materials. Measure the box, all 3 sides. Half inches are always rounded up. Imput into the listing form, and charge for shipping.
One or two or three painful lessons and you won't forget...mine was a danish teak chair eons ago as a new seller. Once I slipped on something else, say a 12" item that ended up going to CA (OF COURSE!) when padded was at least 15".

I shipped a 15# package this week.
As it was over 84" (60 X 12 X 11) the balloon 20# rate was applied.
Retail on that is $20-$88.
Commercial $15-$85.

You can probably buy it a one way ticket on a Southwest Flight for less Shipping costs are becoming unmanageable and utterly ridiculous...

Anything big and heavy I take to FedEx. Their prices beat USPS and UPS.
I occasionally ship whole cases of vintage pop bottles in the wood crates and it's usually $20.00 cheaper through Fedx.

I'm sure every one of us has made this same mistake.

On heavy items don't use free shipping. If your on the east coast, some one in California will buy it every time. Now you know why thirty day free returns are a bad idea. All I sell is pretty much heavy items like this. I can't offer free returns so I'm lossing TRS.
I do offer free shipping on small items. Any thing first class mail. Any thing that will fit in a flat rate box.
Any thing else I offer free shipping on I offer Parcel select. That does a couple of things. One, it gives you a later delivery date. Two, any other service is a upgrade and most of the time it's cheaper and always faster.

thanks for all of this help.
right now I am trying very hard not to be angry at my boyfriend.
his answer is to just not ship it.
refund the buyer because I messed up on the shipping.
people who don't sell on ebay just don't get it.
so now I am driving to the post office ( on turnover day) and will handle it myself.
I am pulling his other items that I am selling for him off my site.
I have 100% positive feedback but won't after this.
omg.

Can your boyfriend not give you the dimensions? I know the feeling of messing up on shipping, so many of us would still like to help you if at all possible. Sometimes, though, it just might not be possible. Shipping is definitely something where size matters.
