sellers what did I do wrong here?

I have a 12 lb. package from NJ to CO. ( its a big box--not huge--just big)

that is $88 to ship via UPS

and $55 via USPS.

Is that right??

am i going to have to lose money on this??

item sold for $114 with free shipping.

its worth alot more....

I had no idea that it would cost so much to ship..

Re: sellers what did I do wrong here?

OP stated that the item was sold with "free shipping".    It's my understanding that with free shipping any method to get the product to the customer within the specified time frame is ok because it's at the seller's expense.

Re: sellers what did I do wrong here?

Even when a listing states "Free shipping" it also will either name a specific service (e.g., Priority Mail, Media Mail) or at least a category that ebay has set up such as expedited, standard, etc.  A seller isn't. allowed to specify "Expedited" and then ship via a slower method.

Please tell us you don't have free returns.

Re: sellers what did I do wrong here?

yep I guess I messed up and the advice about a smaller box is excellent.

we listed it doing comparisons with other items that were the exact same thing.

we priced ourselves a few bucks below that...

I have no idea how those other sellers can ship this same item for free if its 55-88?

and yes it goes from a 0 zip code to a 7 zip code ---

of course we will ship but ouch. ....I seem to remember that I used to be able to sell a 15 lb item for about $1.25 a pound???

I still didn't see the dimensions, which can be way more important than the weight if they are large.  We always have to take them into consideration when figuring costs on larger items.  The cost of shipping a feather in a very large box can be shocking.

@lewisburggold

Thank you!  This is great; but OP is on a deadline and I am afraid he will ship outside his handling time.  Do you have any suggestions as to where would he buy this and have it quickly to fulfill his handling time so he doesn't get a shipped late ding?  Is this something USPS has at their post office or is it a special item that must be ordered?

Even a big one like this?  Would they have it at his local Post Office?  Or do you think that is an item that must be ordered?  Sorry if this is a stupid question.  I don't know about the large boxes lewisburggold mentions.

Re: sellers what did I do wrong here?

There are 2 different configurations of large flat rate boxes from USPS. The sizes are 12 x 12 x 5.5 or 23 11/16 x 11 3/4 x 3. See if your item will fit in either size. Then it will cost you about $20 (it's a flat rate fee, not based on weight or where it is going).

You get the boxes free at the Post Office, they include insurance and ship fast with tracking.

Another case of a seller wanting help, but refusing to give the important information we need to be able to help.  The size/dimensions have been asked for repeatedly.
