That's what you did wrong. Know shipping before you list.

I was going to ask what is the box size but someone else already did.

That's sort of the perils of offering free shipping on a heavy item. The only good it does is offer people in the far reaches of the US a deal at your expense. Ebay still makes just as much so they encourage it.

Don't offer free shipping if it's a heavy item

Sounds like you got hit with the balloon charge.

That is why posters are asking you what the box size is.  If you can safely use a smaller box, you might avoid the balloon charge for oversized packages.

Without specific information it is impossible to say. To and from ZIP codes and the actual size of the box.

ANYTHING over 1 cubic foot is generally considered to be an oversized box and the shipping takes a huge jump. (One minor exception is when the package is only going a short distance)

As to the specific question “what did I do wrong” - you should have verified the shipping costs BEFORE you posted your listing and adjusted the price accordingly.

At this point you are ethically obliged to ship. Consider the loss to be the cost of learning.

USPS flat rate shipping works best for heavy items.

We don't know the size of  the  itme,.  You should check out USPS  priority flat rate boxes.

Will it fit in a Priority Mail flat rate box?  Any parcel that is over 12x12x12 inches has extra charges added on. When it comes to free shipping I try to keep it between 1 and 2 pounds unless it is media mail.

Based on the information you provided, I am comfortable answering your question by saying, Yes.

OK, we know the weight and (approximate) distance.  But the answer to your question depends on the actual exact dimensions of your box.

For instance, USPS shipping has a "balloon" rate that applies to most packages with a length-plus-girth over 84 inches, an "oversize" rate for packages with a length-plus-girth over 108 inches, and a "dimensional weight" for Priority Mai packages over 1 cubic foot if they're going to Zones 5 - 9.

Are you using usps priority? usps parcel select is much cheaper. If using usps select don't forget to buy insurance as it is not free.

The seller has to ship using the method stated in the listing. They cannot change it after a sale has been made.

@lewisburggold- the price doesn't seem off to me. I shipped a 15lb box cross country several months back and it cost about $80 because of size. See the above post from @nobody*s_perfect.
