"He has 17,700 bottles of Handsanitizer and nowhere to sell them"..................

New York Times article about The sad tale of a guy who just wanted to make a buck...............

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/14/technology/coronavirus-purell-wipes-amazon-sellers.html

Is it any wonder the stores were sold out and old folks (such as myself) couldn't purchase any???

If you're anywhere near Central PA,will give you some home-made sanitizer for free. It came out quite well&am passing it around (good kharma). Plus I guess I lucked out in my rural area, no Uhauls drove thru&cleaned out all the "mom&pop" stores...yet. Keep forgetting to ask the Amish when out&about what they do/use,they might have better home-remedies for such.🕊

I'd be setting up a supply line with the "Pennsylvania Dutch" for SOAP. Most soap is imported and made in China. Only a matter of time before supply runs out.

I strongly suspect the "Amish" have the facilities to produce and distribute all of their own soap.

Re: "He has 17,700 bottles of Handsanitizer and nowhere to sell them"..................

States should make it illegal to buy excessive amounts of anything during states of emergency, and stores should be held accountable if they allow excessive amounts to be purchased. It's not difficult to distinguish between the person buying for personal use, and the one buying for profit.

Some stores are. The closest large grocery to me has been only allowing one purchase@a time on certain items(I.e.TP),and has signs up to explain the obvious. It's privately-owned (family business),but it's main distributor is from Chicago. That's the right way to go,IMO anyway.

Its already happening here. Wal-mart has signs up with limits for certain items and other stores are enforcing limits at the registers. Had a guy in front of me get denied on a sale for 4 bottles of day/ny-quil - they would only sell him 3 per day. The cashier stated this straight-up.

edit to add:

Not the "good stuff" (psuedoephedrine) either... just the stuff that's normally on the shelf.

Wanted to go to the indoor farmers market this morn to see what's new&ask for ideas,as I'm not seeing as many Amish as usual around of late, but  had to work instead. The population here is about 25% Amish(with a few Mennonite communities also). These people know their stuff, they are seeped in tradition. Did buy some homemade soap@my local feedstore tho, where I get chickenfeed. Am keeping the birds well-fed&happy,so they will do their best in return.

But to rent a U-Haul and go store to store to store for a total of 1300 miles, purposefully cleaning out entire stocks from rural stores just so they can turn a fast buck?? To me that's despicable.

Why the heck just not place bulk orders from wholesalers?? They could have saved themselves a whole lot of time and money just by bulk ordering from Dollar Tree, and saved the rural stores' stock for the local residents.  Not only are they despicable, they're stupid.

You don't order from wholesalers, because the first thing you have to do is create the shortage in the first place.  While some posters have posted garbage about letting supply and demand work and not prohibit price gouging, this practice intentionally manipulates that supply/demand equation by making the supply look scarce.  The supply didn't change, but it's all under the control of one person and consumers don't have any way to know that.  All they know is that there is none to be found, so panic buying sets in.  (All part of the plan.)

I hope he gets a visit from the local authorities.

Doctors are explicitly saying that proper hand-washing is actually MORE effective at combating the virus than hand sanitizer is.  You don't need hand sanitizer at all, you just need to make sure you wash your hands properly.  Apparently this is extremely difficult for a lot of people to grasp.

Agree. I also do not buy or use hand sanitizer, unless I am in a situation where no running water is available.

Those recommendations don't even include soap. Running your hands under running water for 20 seconds is sufficient.

Exactly, it's the physical act of scrubbing that makes the difference, because that sloughs the virus off your hands. I haven't bought any hand sanitizer and I don't plan to. I plan to just keep on washing my hands the way I always have-- the way EVERYONE should have been doing all along.

Which is pretty much anywhere public, that's a lotta places, and a lotta people touching a lotta things. I don't normally like hand sanitizer, but am appreciating it's purpose now. And am grateful for well-water(just because).

To be clear... making the supply "look" scarce on any given essential item when it is NOT would definitely be price gouging.

Charging higher price for scarce, but non-essential items is NOT "price gouging."

There was a study.. I believe back in the 90s... that showed the act of washing (with water ONLY) alone got rid of 99% of the pathogens. Washing with soap yielded another 0.5% removal of pathogens. Again, 20 seconds washing, here.

So, soap IS better than nothing. However, washing with water only is WAY better than nothing.

I suspect I'll be challenged so I guess I better go look it up.

I am advocating the use of hand sanitizer where no running water is available.

Running water alone kills more microbes than hand sanitizer alone does, in the absence of water.

My family owns a well drilling(water) company and well water is not immune. Well water can have its own bacterial colonization without treatment. Its not common, but it can happen.

Then the most guilty would be the news media.

I guess I'm more aware/appreciative of hand sanitizer lately because I spend ample time@work with people in their 80s/90s. How odd is it that I feel safer snuggling with a four-month-old then hugging grown adults?

As for the well-water,we have it checked routinely (&the septic too) to hopefully keep it safer.
