Heads up! eBay says they are internally testing a new iteration of the AI Magic Lister that will allow sellers to simply snap a picture and let the bots due the rest to create listings, with the expectation to roll it out to sellers in "the coming months."

What new kind of hell is this going to cause?
Is AI going to tell us what we should sell it for? Some kind of automated appraisal ...? I'd be interested in its 'opinion' - may not agree, but ... I'd like to 'hear' it.
On one of the accounts, I am in the process of increasing prices across the board by 20%, doing 'free' shipping and a 5% Promoted Listings ... the 20% breaks me even or a little ahead on the above changes.
I'm either going to MAKE money at this ... or I'll quit.

Oh good lord...this is SO not a good idea. Thanks for the heads up as always, @valueaddedresource . Always appreciated. 😊

If it does, Ignore it if you do not like it.

Perhaps. But so what? Ignore it if you do not like it.

Same here. If I stop making money, I'll quit.

Yikes! Can't wait for the "Magical Returns" this should create.
As long as we have a choice, I won't be using it for my category.

WOW! At this rate, by the year 2030, eBay won't need anybody. eBay will be just one huge computer that can 3-D print your item and have it droned to your porch in under an hour. Time to load up on eBay stock.

@valueaddedresource thanks for sharing.
The idea seems a bit dangerous for sellers if they do not carefully review the AI-generated content for errors before listing.

ebay already makes price suggestions in the listing form, at least for some things. Given what I sell, I generally ignore them. But yes, that's "magic"!
"From a simple photo, AI can write titles, descriptions and add vital information, which could include product release date, detailed category and sub-category, and can combine with eBay’s other tech to suggest a listing price and shipping cost."
Could this work for some items? Yes. Trading cards are a pretty good example. But for much of what I sell, I remain skeptical. Time will tell.
And frankly, I admit, even if this works really well, what then? More sellers listing more stuff doesn't necessarily mean more buyers wanting to buy all the stuff....in many categories, we already face overwhelming amounts of stuff. Additionally, if even the most uninformed seller can list something with this tool, what about when buyers have questions? Will ebay's "Magic" answer the questions, too? And if not, will the seller know enough about his item to provide a knowledgeable answer?
But, despite whatever reservations I may have, this is coming like a freight train roaring down the tracks, and pretty much every site is under pressure to prove they are using this new "bestest thing in the whole wide world"...ebay is no exception....so, strap in and get ready for the white knuckle thrill ride of the holiday season, as ebay unleashes this probably smack in the middle of Q4....
For this old Luddite, setting up at the flea market looks better every day LOL

It's only going to be an issue for people named Sarah Connor.

@my-cottage-books-and-antiques "And frankly, I admit, even if this works really well, what then? More sellers listing more stuff doesn't necessarily mean more buyers wanting to buy all the stuff"
Great point! Regardless of my opinion of AI in general, I can think of a whole list of things that I believe eBay should be doing to try to bring in more buyers that should be a higher priority than this.

Can't wait to see the AI generated listing for an item of clothing displayed on a patterned rug with the seller's feet showing at the bottom of the frame, or a flower pot for sale sitting in all it's vintage glory on top of the toilet tank (yes, I saw that)

@southern*sweet*tea exactly! The video they released is clearly a mockup, not an actual demo so who knows how well this will really work in practice, especially with more obscure, vintage, or one of a kind items vs mass produced new consumer goods or with less than ideal images as you described.
Jamie told Goldman Sachs earlier this week he used it to list an old stereo remote that sold for $30.
"The version we showed there is a product that's currently an employee beta, which is, how do I figure out what a product is and do all the hard work so the seller doesn't have to do anything? And I'll just tell you a story. We're cleaning up my garage with my wife, and she finds this old remote control from a stereo I had 25 years ago. And she's like, "Okay, throw this out. Like, Jamie, we don't have the stereo. It's been 25 years." And I'm like, "Okay, better idea, let me sell it on eBay."
So, I literally just hold up my phone to it, and it figures out what this remote control is, it figures out what stereos it's compatible with, it writes the description for this remote control, and I listed on the platform. It says to price it at $30. I priced it at $30. And guess what, a week-and-a-half later, this remote control sells for $30. That would have absolutely been in the trash without this technology."
But color me highly skeptical, especially considering the current state of eBay's image recognition capabilities that we've seen with the "find visually similar" test.

Most likely going to be very iffy at the start. But if they can flesh it out overtime, will be an amazing time saver and tool for bulk sellers.

Maybe AI can fix The SEARCH ENGINE!!!!
