I recently sold an item for $44.90 and was surprised to see only $37.65 sent to me as a payment. I did some research and then learned that eBay's current fees are a whopping 14.55% for items up to $2500??? What??
Am I the only one who thinks this is astronomical? I thought the selling fees were 9.5%!!!

The FVF are usually 12.55% on the entire transaction amount (including any applicable shipping fees and taxes) plus the .30 cent processing fee.
We are no longer paying the PayPal almost 3% fee plus 35 cent processing fee so it seems like a sticker shock b/c we are seeing all fees accounted for at once whereas we would not see the PayPal fees.

If you think ebay fees are bad, just wait until you get their tax form and have to pay taxes on the income too.

I would think that is because of the new "Managed Payments" system. All charges on everything including shipping and taxes.
At least you received payment. A lot of others on here are still waiting for theirs.

You do understand you aren't paying the 2.9% to paypal anymore?

Yes I do and it's still higher. Ebay was 9.5%, paypal was 2.9%. That's 12.4% total.
Now the totals are 14.55%
I'm sorry but that's outrageusly high imo

Just clarifying: You do know that fees are charged on the item price, the shipping cost and the state sales taxes, if applicable?

eBay fees are fairly complicated.
The can vary by seller status, store subscription level, MP vs. PayPal, category, price, international vs. domestic buyer, listing promotion level, shipping cost paid by buyer, sales tax paid by buyer, listing enhancements, penalty fees, below standard fees, and probably a dozen other factors.
And don't forget that just like PayPal, that 30 cent fixed fee can distort your percentages. 30 cents on a $10 is 3%, and on a $25 sale it is 1.2%.

That sounds like the percentage for the category of "Books/magazines".

eBay's final value fee rate for non-stores was set at 9% in 2011 and raised to 10% in 2013. I don't recall it ever being 9.5%. Then in 2018, the FVF was raised to 12% in several media categories including not only books but movies, music etc. And then recently all categories got an increase of 0.2%.
So your math for the Zelda soundtrack should be based on a non-MP rate of 12.2%, not 9.5%. And 12.2% plus PayPal's 2.9% would be 15.1%.
Then to top it all off, PayPal's rate has been raised to 3.9%.

You asked and my answer is: No, I do not think the eBay take-out is "astronomical" or "outrageous." Having for years operated as a brick-and-mortar, and for a short time selling on consignment, I find the cost of doing business here a doddle.
