eBay Open 2024

Keynote starts at 9am PT, noon ET. If you haven't registered and want to attend, you can do that here.

This year's Expo booths shown below. Different product teams participate each year (and different sponsors). If you have questions or feedback for eBay on any of the following topics, you can ask them on the Q&A tab for that booth, or use the chat tab while a booth is live.

Hey @pjcdn2005 @sin-n-dex @marnotom! - there's an eBay Canada booth this year. That's new. Nice to see our neighbors to the north getting some recognition.

Edit: never mind. There was an eBay Canada booth last year, too - so that's not new. It's early and my brain's not at full function yet. 😂

After going back and rewatching the keynote, I have to say....it's really some high level gaslighting in my opinion that when VP Buying Experience Blair Ethington was talking about the "new" (not really new) View Item Page, the slide shown on the screen had absolutely zero Promoted Listings ads showing, just a nice clean beautiful listing page showcasing the item.

Meanwhile the actual user experience right now is often a competitor banner Promoted Display ad at the top, at least one static row of ads directly under the image and a scrolling carousel with at least 12 more ads before you even get to the description and....I've seen 300+ ads below the description on some listings lately if eBay has the "infinite scroll" engaged.

It's not surprising, just particularly disappointing and disingenuous especially considering that whole promise about how they were going to move IS and description above any ad modules. 😒

Thanks   @a_c_green enjoyed the recap........always wondered how those thing went......

Thanks @wastingtime101  for info......

I did some whining in the SH/tools booth about no info/announcements about changes so sellers didn't know whether change were glitches/tests/permanent.  Mentioned both the Listing quality report and the 2-4 day change for acceptance/rejection offers.  Got the usual.......we'll take it back....blah, blah...  But then David Bernstein, Product Manager, replied asking me where I would want an announcement...... Surprisingly enough, I said the Announcement Page.....lol........since the community board was only frequented by a small % of sellers and not everyone used seller hub.  I'm hoping he's a cut above those that have to refer it to the teams.....I don't really count on anything happening, but at least it seemed someone paid attention enough to ask the question.

I would urge anyone with a grip about structure or tools to go to those booths...click on Q & A
and "ask" a question.......warning......there is a limit on the # of letters which isn't obvious.  Suggest you write it out somewhere and copy/paste.  My first one was wiped out and had to do over.

Maybe I missed it, but has anyone asked about ebay about making listings that are just viewed eligible for offers?  This seems to annoy just about everyone.  Many buyers do not want offers just for looking and moving on.

@a_c_green  It was just the MENTION of the cocktail weiners wieners weeners that got you a star. Those things are so horrible and so very delicious. When I was a kid we used to fry them wrapped in bacon and put toothpicks in them on a fancy plate for oo-la-la hors d'oeuvre (it was like that where I grew up - we also sliced the crusts off the bread, you know, because we were classy).

The comparison of the two in your write-up was really striking - that clean, clean view with Blair, and then the contrast with the ads stuffed in, many with just awful photos, the plug for a competing store at the top - it was hard to figure out what was being sold.

I'm guessing we might get details on some of the "new" things next week or whenever they finally announce the Fall Seller Update. One upcoming change they are working on is a new Seller Mode for the App . That could be good, but the devil is in the details and there weren't any today

There's a slim chance that they are saving the best new changes for tomorrow, but I doubt it. I certainly didn't hear anything today that made me say "Wow...game changer for Q4!"

One AI tip I saw in chat ... A seller said he copies eBay s AI description and then asks chatGPT to improve it. I might have to give that a try, just for the fun of it ..

I totally knew that AI and ChatGPT were different things.  Totally.  😬

That might be fun to try just for the heck of it.

But when I go to buy something, I want just the facts and an accurate description, not the flowery sales pitch.

If AI is simply drawing from the Item Specifics fields to make a word salad, then why do we need a description at all?

@adamcartwright my guess is, eBay AI draws from IS and the title. I think other forms of AI might cast their nets wider, and so the description might be better . It would probably depend a lot in the item itself.

I have played around with eBay background enhancer, but it is rather limited. I saw others in chat saying they ignore it and instead use Canva, which provides far more customization.

I don't think we should assume all AI is as limited as eBay AI. I believe List Perfectly actually lets you set a tone, so you could say "Folksy" and the description would sound more Folksy than flowery, etc. I haven't tried it

I'm not a fan of eBay description AI, but I suppose for those who don't like to write, but who can edit and revise, it is ok   But I suspect there is better AI out there, and especially for people with a lot of inventory to list, it might pay to explore some of those options

It does. This is most obvious when the seller has plugged in some odd value of Item Specific (or forgotten to take one out when copying the listing from somewhere else as a starting point), which AI then picks up and attempts to use in a sentence, with sometimes hilarious results.

eBay Open 2024

One of the most comically bad things from eBay Open so far ...

Anybody that frequents this forum knows how much sellers have been frustrated with eBay's push for buyers to include product reviews in feedback. An eBay seller brought up this point very directly, and the response was seemingly to a non-existent question.

Seller: A pet peeve are buyers who receive brand new items but claim flaws that did not exist when we listed and shipped the item. I dislike feeling like I am being blackmailed and I can’t stand up for my business without worrying about getting negative feedback.

I know some sellers have the impression that you need to keep 100% feedback and that’s not my point of view. There are times that we make mistakes in our business, and we own that.

But what aggravates me is when there is nothing wrong with my service or the accuracy of my listing, but the buyer just didn’t like the product.

I’d love to see more of a separation between feedback about the level of service I provided, which I can control, vs the buyer's opinion of the product, which I cannot control.

And, I’m not saying that reviews of the item are not valuable. But I don’t think it should reflect negatively on me as a seller and the service we provide when the buyer gets exactly what they ordered but are experiencing buyers remorse.

eBay's response - has nothing at all to do with product reviews! :

Once again Laurie, you are raising great points. First off, I want to be clear to all sellers that any evidence of a buyer using the threat of negative feedback to get something in return is against our policy. In addition, we will absolutely take down negative or neutral feedback that was left because the buyer asked you to cancel, and you were unable to or chose not to. Or, if a buyer asked for money off of the item and you refused. T hat’s entirely your right and we will protect you from negative feedback.

In fact, as follow up to the last Seller Check-in, I want to let everyone know that we’ve made it much easier to understand all our policies around feedback removal. Our community relies on honest, transparent feedback. And, over the last year, we began work to create a more streamlined and consistent process for sellers to ask for feedback removals.

However, as these new changes were put into action they exposed gaps in our underlying policies. We realized that we did not have every valid use case covered for our sellers and, as a result, some feedback removal requests were rejected in situations where you deserved to be protected.

Since this spring, we’ve been working to update our policies and processes and you can find more details on our new Feedback policy page. Just scan the QR code on the slide or go to our Help pages and search for “feedback policy.”

By the way I loved your comments about how mistakes happen as well as your comfort with your 99.7% positive feedback score. It’s worth remembering that buyers do not expect to see 100% positive feedback. In fact, buyers have told us that they find a seller responding professionally to negative feedback resonates positively and powerfully. I love that this is something you do Laurie.

That said, whenever a seller thinks feedback is unjustified and covered by our feedback removal policies, we are more than happy to evaluate it. You can send a request for review via Seller Help on our website.

Thank you -- okay, yes I don't know anything about any of those other tools.

I'm not at that level yet.
