Hi, I recently sold two Corelle bowls-the buyer stated that she used them after receiving them but then melted butter in the microwave in one and noticed it leaking-then stated it was washed and it cracked. They want a return for the one(which I'm sure you will all say I have to do) but in a case like this how do you know something wasn't mishandled or whatever after receipt of the item?

You should not melt butter in a microwave. This, I would think, is common knowledge to anyone who's ever attempted it, but I understand that this is slightly irrelevant to your plight.
The problem is, it heats unevenly, and while Corelle is OK for microwave heating up to 350 degrees.. butter could exceed that temperature on one side of the bowl, while the other end of the stick is cold as ice.
It is possible to safely soften butter in a microwave if you stop and check it every ten seconds or so... but again, this isn't terribly helpful to you.
I'm a big fan of Corelle. It reminds me of my childhood and I still have my parents' dishes from the 70s. I've bought some pieces here on eBay to round out the set. And I've learned that once in a while, the pieces do break. It probably was just bad luck. Hopefully, like mine, the pieces are only a few dollars each, and you can weather the refund.
I'd try to steer her toward a happy purchase, replacing the broken piece if you can or giving her a fair discount, with the warning that butter should be melted under constant supervision.
By the way, I was also just on Corning's website, and while it does say to not overheat butter in a microwave... it does not say not to melt butter in a microwave.

According to their website, this could have caused it to crack.

Here's the link btw:

Remember, she's probably been melting butter in the microwave for years if her sense of taste and smell are shot. This may be the first time a bowl has broken for her.

Unfortunately, there is no way to have the buyer just return one and refund for the one through ebay's return flow.

Is it possible to offer a partial refund?

Send them Emerald's link and then refund them half. There's no winning this.

Well, the older ones did also - you could enter your power level from 10 to 100. There wasn't a 'button' for what the microwave 'thinks' will defrost a chicken or a roast like there is now.

Hi! I'd ask for a photo of the bowl, refund half if she sends it, and block.
Yes, it was probably her misuse that caused the problem.
I've handled tons of Corelle over the years. Still do. I've never see a cracked piece that remained whole. Edge wear, or edge chips, certainly. Corelle doesn't crack like normal glass. It usually shatters into a bazillion tiny shards. I've had a cereal bowl break in half relatively cleanly in the hot dishwasher twice.
Last year I had a cereal bowl get broken during shipping. The buyer had no problem sending me a photo of the bowl broken into many small pieces. I had more, so I just sent a replacement.
If it were my sale, I might be tempted to pay for the return just to examine it for myself...The glass weirdo in me would be curious to see it.

Keep the message stating she microwaved it if she opens a return call ebay & have them read the message.
I don't know why my colleagues are suggesting you refund anything. I wouldn't refund for her carelessness.
@Trinton
@alan
Can someone clarify please?
