anyone else get this email?

I got this email about eBay and taxes.  Did anyone else get it too?  It says it is from eBay, but pf course I didn't respond to it.    Legit?

Hello eBay Seller,

Imagine selling a few items to clear out your basement and garage and getting hit with another IRS 1099-K form when you file your taxes.

Small businesses and casual online sellers have enough complexity in their lives already. Now, a provision tucked into legislation passed earlier this year will require millions of Americans to receive confusing and burdensome tax forms for the sale of used or pre-owned goods.

Here's the kicker: this may even impact sales that are non-taxable events!

The impact of this change will be that casual sellers – everyday people supplementing their income to support their families – will now receive confusing tax forms intended for actual businesses.

We need your help to change this law immediately.

Treating casual sellers like established businesses for tax purposes makes no sense. If you are interested in getting more involved in this issue, please respond to this email and a member of eBay’s Government Relations team will contact you shortly.

It will only take a few minutes and help people protect their privacy and avoid unnecessary and complicated tax burdens.

Best,

Christiana Meyers

Re: anyone else get this email?

It does not matter if you got a 1099 or not. Income is income and always has been. The current administration changed the reporting threshold starting tax year 2022. Which mean in 2023 is when that new threshold will be met with 1099's.

I would be more upset with the previous administration that removed the majority of deductions for hobbyist & casual sellers. Hope you have not been taking any home deductions the last couple of years. It will eventually catch up to you.

@evry1nositswindy

Did not receive the email you did.  I too would have found it odd.

Re: anyone else get this email?

It's legit; It's a waste of time as US Lawmakers already made it a 'thing' in exchange for giving all Americans Trillions of $$ in the Covid Times; The exchange on this is those that sell $1000, $3000, $8000, $17000 and were not reporting these amounts, will now have to pay taxes on a portion of that amount, which will help those pay back those Trillions of $$ given out.

It will not change. The Trillions are already in our pockets. They (US Gov.) want to get it back.

Ebay and others are only doing this because they now have to work sending out 100's of 1000's of these 'additional' forms, which takes a many people to collect/save/and create these forms, then pack & ship them out. 100's of 1000's.

Look for an increase in selling fees to cover this, starting Jan 2022.

Also, usually if it's an official email, it will address you by name, not as "seller".

Re: anyone else get this email?

Usually I would expect something like this to also be in my ebay Messages if it is legit.

Forward it here and they will tell you whether fake or not:

spoof@ebay.com

That doesn't always work. I once forwarded an email that I positively knew came from eBay just to test out the spoof thing and they reported it as a spoof even when I knew for sure that it was not. So spoof cannot be trusted.

And I do get emails from eBay that never end up in my Messages section so you do have to really check out every one you get.

Re: anyone else get this email?

If you want to see if a message is actually from ebay, one method is to go to My Ebay/Messages, and see if it appears there "From Ebay".

@readabouthorsesGuess anymore you can't rely on anything concerning ebay.  Better safe than sorry with all the scams going around saying they are from ebay.
