Why do people buy just 1 of a inexpensive item?

I sell these Hi-Chew candies. They range in price from $2 to $4 each. Shipping is $4 for the first pack and $1 for each additional pack.

Alot of my sales are people who just order 1 pack.

I am **bleep** about packing.  Each pack gets wrapped in paper, then put in a small padded pouch envelope (i get at work for free), them placed in another larger padded envelope.  I really do put alot of care in packing.

Sometimes it seems silly to do all that for someone ordering just 1 pack.

I have a "disclaimer" on my listings that reads  "you're welcome to buy just 1 pack but shipping is just ONE DOLLAR for each additional pack".

So why do people buy just 1 pack?

Honestly, what the buyer is thinking doesn't matter.
You have to decide if packing up one pack is too much of a bother for you. If it is, then only list 2+ packages as lots. You are the seller and you set the terms of what you want to sell. As long as your listing 1 package option, they can purchase it.

Why are you selling $2 candy with $3 shipping? To many buyers it looks like a ripoff and your DSR for shipping charges is reflecting this. Why not just list for $5 with free shipping and automatically get 5 stars for shipping charges.

I agree. That is they type of thing that gets me to click on a listing. Then I get sticker shock, and hit the back button. Ask yourself why the buyer should pay you $3 shipping when they can get the same item from outside the US with free shipping? I understand that the seller is trying to use high shipping price as a way of getting people to buy more, but it is obviously not working.

That said the seller seems to have found a nice little niche, selling single item samples to people who don't want to wait a month to try it. Should probably emphasize fast shipping, maybe even consider Fulfilled by Amazon. It seems like a spur of the moment item that people might be willing to pay extra to get it quickly.

@guybemis

Good idea, since @inhawaii is shipping from the Islands.

I can only speak for myself but when i buy my mom's favorite candy bar, Annabelle's milk chocolate Rocky Road, it's hard to find in bricks & mortars stores and I don't want to buy 24 bars on Ama*on since i know that's unhealthy for her to gobble up in a short time.  Thankfully on ebay, sellers here sell it in smaller packs.

It's like when i go to the supermarket.  Do i want to buy a whole 3-layer 16-inch by 16-inch huge cake for dessert for myself or do i just want 1 slice?? Even if my wallet can take it, my body can't.

Yes, if you don't have it in the house, you can't put it in your mouth, and just a taste accomplishes this.

Well, maybe they've never had them before and want to try them to see if they like them. That is what I would do.

You may want to make them more decorative like the bricks & mortar stores do during the holidays.  You could make more $$s during the holidays like valentines by packing them with colored flashy paper, bows, a beautiful Valentines card.  In Easter, include a new cute basket with a small stuffed furry bunny.  I gotta admit i buy things like this for myself to put on my work desk or to give to friends

Re: Why do people buy just 1 of a inexpensive item?

Thanks.  I was in listing a new promotion but the markdown manager/promotions are broken.  I called twice and Ebay was unaware of it at the time and now are investigating it.  I'm running 15% off when you buy 2 or more pairs.(when the bug is fixed)

If it's a problem, why list them singly so they can be purchased as such?
