Why do people buy just 1 of a inexpensive item?

I sell these Hi-Chew candies. They range in price from $2 to $4 each. Shipping is $4 for the first pack and $1 for each additional pack.

Alot of my sales are people who just order 1 pack.

I am **bleep** about packing.  Each pack gets wrapped in paper, then put in a small padded pouch envelope (i get at work for free), them placed in another larger padded envelope.  I really do put alot of care in packing.

Sometimes it seems silly to do all that for someone ordering just 1 pack.

I have a "disclaimer" on my listings that reads  "you're welcome to buy just 1 pack but shipping is just ONE DOLLAR for each additional pack".

So why do people buy just 1 pack?

Perhaps simply because you have not chosen to make it easier for them to do so by create a variation listing and free shipping.

For example:

-- select -

1 pack = $8

2 packs = $9

3 packs = $10

4 packs = $11

5 packs = $12

If you think about it, you would actually be forcing them to at least consider buying more than one.

It's not hard to figure out.  It's because you're welcoming them to do exactly that.  It says right in your description "You're welcome to buy just one pack" in big red letters.

Because they don't want more.

They probably want to try the candy so they can buy bigger quantities cheaper somewhere else.

That is very likely. I was recently Googleing for the solution to a problem, and I found it with an overseas product. I found the product listed on eBay from both a US seller and an overseas seller. Unfortunately even with volume pricing, the US seller's lowest price was still more then the single item price from the overseas seller. Since I needed it fast, I ordered one pack from the US seller, ignoring the volume price, and one pack from the overseas seller. I'm still waiting for the item to arrive from overseas. Once I have both, I'm going to inspect them and make sure they are the exact same item and quality. If they are, I will probably order more from the overseas seller. Just because it is the lowest price and I will have two packs to last me until it arrives.

You might have something there.  They don't want to over indulge.  So just a little treat is fine but more than one is not.

Why do you sell them one at a time?

The buyer has probably never tasted your candy and just want to sample some. Smiley Happy

Yes, and once they try them, that might lead to more sales and larger sales in the future!

Why are you selling $2 candy with $3 shipping? To many buyers it looks like a ripoff and your DSR for shipping charges is reflecting this. Why not just list for $5 with free shipping and automatically get 5 stars for shipping charges.

On a side note, are you allowed to have your watermark on your pictures anymore?

I believe ebay stopped enforcing that.

When I read it, I stopped removing my watermarks.  I figure those items might sell out before ebay changed their minds!

Maybe they had exactly that amount in eBay bucks, liked the thought "free", and did not want to spend one lousy penny to get it.
