Why Am I Being Sent to Collections??

Hi everyone. I had some difficult issues with a buyer the beginning of the year. She falsely claimed to not have received an item and I won the appeal. The issue went back and forth and she eventually filed a chargeback. I filed a claim with my bank and they protected me from the chargeback. Fast forward to today, eBay has sent me a few emails regarding a balance I have to pay to Global Collections. I’ve ignored them as I know I did nothing wrong in this situation and I am a victim to fraud. I’ve just received a email that they will progress the situation and send it to a debt collector. At this point, I have no idea what there is left do. Is there any contact information or a routine process  that I should go about? I’ve won every appeal and my bank has protected me but yet they want to send me to collections rather than the fraudulent buyer. Any advice or contact information would be extremely appreciated.

Everyone says pay it anyway, or anything, OTHER than arbitration. eBay HAS an arbitration process. If you have saved/copied correspondences between you and eBay, and eBay sided with you in an appeal, eBay is the one who has to pay the chargeback. They sided with YOU, doesn't matter the buyer filed/won a chargeback, eBay contractually says they cover those types of chargebacks. Your only avenue is to file an arbitration case at this point.

I don't know why none of the sellers here ever suggest arbitration. It's the process sellers/buyers are supposed to use. In this case, it's a prime example of why they should. eBay is not following it's own posted rules and is trying to shove the costs off to the seller, when THEY are supposed to be responsible for the chargeback. You won the appeal, you are not supposed to be responsible.

Why would I refund a buyer when I won the appeals against their fraudulent behavior? I only intervened with my bank because the buyer was unhappy with the several appeal decisions ebay has made in my favor and decided to file a chargeback.

You owe eBay because eBay had to refund the buyer.  eBay puts most risk on the sellers.  The buyer has already received his money back - you are trying to stiff eBay.  You owe the money to eBay, not the buyer.  Simple as that.

YES!! The original claim was INR which I won. The second claim was Item not matching description which I also won. I had complete protection and had a good experience with ebay up until this. I’m assuming the buyer was unhappy with the decisions of the appeals and escalated it to their bank. Somehow their bank appealed their request for a chargeback, which is when I visited my bank and they protected me from this fraudulent claim. EBay has the history of the appeals and their customer service even assured me that this would not happen. At this point, I’m not sure where to go or who to reach out to since their customer service isn’t the best

"I just got a email months later that the buyer payment institution has ruled in their favor…. and will retrieve the funds from my account"

Sounds like you lost the case with their credit card.

Ebay refunded the buyer, now you have to pay Ebay back.

Have a great day.

Yes except I filed a claim afterwards which granted me the money back. This is why I’m so confused why I would still owe the fees if I was able to win the case

The INR with Ebay was found in your favor.

The INAD with the buyers bank was found in the buyers favor.

Have a great day.

I get what you are saying, but it's wrong in this case. Seller won both open cases and eBay is responsible if the buyer files a chargeback. Had the buyer just filed a chargeback, then that is different. Buyer filed and lost two cases, seller is protected. eBay is the one that has to pay.

Strangest thing I've ever heard of. Your 'bank' can't do a thing for you when a buyer does a Charge Back on ebay.

It's between you and the bank, even ebay is out and YOUR bank can't do anything for a 'Charge Back'.

Definitely sounds like you THINK your bank 'backed you' but if they could/did, there would NOT be any 'collections' going on in the first place.

Again, not 1 thing your bank can do for you on a Charge Back.

@vangons-0

What was the reason given for the chargeback?   Was it different than "item not received" (INR)?    If it was for  INR, then you should have had some seller protection for a chargeback for the same reason as the eBay claim.
Take a look and let us know.

The buyer filed an INAD with their bank.

Have a great day.

Nope. Buyer opened an INR case and lost, then opened an INAD case with eBay and lost. THEN they filed a chargeback with their bank, which means eBay is responsible for the refund. Don't know why any seller here would want to take on eBay's debt? They make the rules, they should be well aware of what they are responsible for.

Your 'bank' can't do a thing for you when a buyer does a Charge Back on ebay.

@stainlessenginecovers

It is my understanding here that eBay charged the OP for the chargeback.  The OP filed a complaint against eBay for the chargeback and was reimbursed i.e. eBay's charge to the OP was reversed by the OP's bank.

Now it appears the OP won TWO eBay claims with this buyer.  The first for INR, the second for NAD.  When the buyer lost the eBay NAD claim, they filed a chargeback for NAD.  When the chargeback is for a reason already won by the OP in an eBay claim, eBay is supposed to take the hit.

See this page for eligible scenarios and excluded transactions:

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/payment-dispute-seller-protections?id=5293&st=3&...

So unless the OP  @vangons-0  simply didn't respond to the chargeback , or I am not understanding something else, I just don't get it.

I get the idea they had their bank block eBay from taking the charge back money. Which would explain why it's in collection. Don't know how they would still have an account after that though..

Thank you so much. You’ve laid it out perfectly.

When I received the emails about the buyer filing a chargeback it had a link to dispute the charge. I tried to dispute it several times but because the case with ebay had already been closed, it kept sending me to an error page.

Any advice what to do now? After some research the only thing I’ve found a section on eBays website stating to send them a letter to dispute information potentially sent to a credit bureau. Is this the only option left?

@vangons-0

If you can present this in a step by step fashion as outlined so there is a clear understanding of what happened step by step, you can contact eBay via one of their social media links.  This leads to a better class, so to speak, of customer service unlike the foreign agents you get in a call back or chat.  They are US based, and are experienced in handling unusual circumstances such as this.  Use one of these:

https://www.facebook.com/eBay/ (use the blue message button)

OR direct message through one of these:

https://www.instagram.com/ebayforsellers/

https://x.com/askebay

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.
