So I sold an item back in February or so, and when the item was sold I couldn't find it. Looked everywhere and thought the person I live with donated it or something, so I told the buyer the situation and that there was nothing I could do about it, but if I found the item in the near future I would still be willing to get it to them.
Well they hit me with a negative feedback, told me to p-ss off and that was about it. There was very little communication from them that I recall. Well I found the item (a coat) and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to procede at this point. I shot them an email immediately after I found it telling them I would keep my word and finish the transaction if they wanted, but their response was along the lines of "well it's not cold anymore - how much do you want for it?" as if to imply they want it...at a lower cost (it was already cheap, comparable to what it was new in the stores).
So surely this has happened in the two decades eBay has been here. What's the protocol at this point? Just let by-gones be by-gones?

Honestly, it's akin to a person who just got robbed and rushing to the nearest good samaritan or police officer asking for help, and then the good samaritan or police asking them about all the crimes they may (or may have not) committed in their past.
LOL. I'm seeing the buyer as the victim here.

It does gripe buyers who have spent time and effort into finding what they want not to get it.......
I've been in that spot a number of times as a buyer, but I don't get nasty about it.
The buyer wasnt nasty, just factual.
They told the OP to P---off.

The factual refers to the neg that was left.
The message was unfortunate but it happened.

Ahhh...I was not even thinking about the neg. I was referring to the messages.

Sorry to hear you couldn't find the jacket when it sold back in February.
The negative is a bummer, but if I couldn't find an item at the time of sale, I would know I'd deserve a neg.
Just curious, but where did you end up finding the jacket?
Your original listing states how the jacket now fits you perfect whereas in the past it was too tight.
So I wondered if you had kept it in a different closet from the usual closet where you keep your eBay clothing inventory? If only you had looked harder, do you think you would have found it back then?

The coat was stuffed back behind a bag of golf clubs (I mostly sell golf clubs, in-season - so I'm starting back up again around Masters week) and it fell back behind there some how. I was digging around in that closet at the golf clubs and sure enough I found the coat, wrapped in the bag as I had it.
Honestly, people here are doing exactly what others here pooh-pooh - they are taking a few "negatives" that I had in a span of 17(??) years on eBay, and then absolutely leveling me with them. They don't even want to hear about those negatives and how they should have been removed (one eBayer kicked off, one never asked me for shipping info, and one the buyer changed their email address and I sent them probably a dozen emails BEGGING them to contact me - later they told me it was their fault - all of those "negatives" should have been removed) because at the end of the day, in their world those "negatives" far outweigh 17 or so years of near flawless transactions and feedback.

@saintpaulgolfwrote:Well they have emailed me back saying they will give me $35 if I cover the difference in shipping (so maybe $5 less than the original transaction) but they also say in the email "I think we can take care of that negative"
So should I make them retract the negative...and then follow through with the transaction? I'd probably settle for a $5.00 loss if the negative was removed.
I understand you are upset about being dishonest, I'm the same way. I have also learned a lot in the last few years. First...you can not make them remove the neg buy holding the coat hostage(so to speak). That is against the rules here. If you want to really get rid of it and are happy with what they are offering, then do what you think is right. Please do not do it because they promise or make you think they will remove the neg. Sometimes people will say whatever they have to to get what they want. Sorry to say it like that, and I know I sound cynical. I've heard it all, and bent over backwards to please people. It rarely works out in my favor.
At the end of the day, you are the only one looking in the mirror. You do what's right for you, and only you.
Good luck.

I say the deal was done when they left a negative.

Am I missing something? The only one I'm seeing bringing up your old negs is you.

Apparently at some other time previously, the OP came to the Board about something and did not mention his negs. Possibly presented himself as having none. And he was hurt and offended when others found them and called him out about it. He felt he was bashed.
No one in this thread has done that but OP has brought that past Board experience up several times, and he felt the buyer in this thread "did him dirty" but did not care for being reminded that the buyer was the victim and may have felt that OP did them dirty.
Congrats to the OP for many years of sales.

It was taken care of.
I just decided I to get rid of the coat. Contacted the person, told them I would cover the difference in shipping costs (it was a lot higher than I expected, actually) they obliged to retraction of the negative feedback (they were NOT COERCED, let me be clear - they did it on their own) and I have packaged the coat up and printed shipping label.
A soft tone can go a long way to resolving issues...(some times...)
