This is interesting that eBay all of sudden asking for social security number, giving the fact they already have access to your bank account, your credit card, NOW a your SS number? What that all means for sellers ? Who is in charge of your life now? You or eBay ? I believe we do have enough of fraud ! Anybody can have access to your account without any problem!! Wa Wa Wa !!!! eBay is not trustworthy!!!!

Well you can provide an EIN if you have one. Otherwise, you have to provide a SSN because you are operating as a business and you have to provide either an EIN or a SSN for tax purposes. They can't issue a 1099 without one or the other. If you've gotten away with not providing one, as a seller, up until now consider yourself lucky.

Byl "know your customer" laws eBay is required to have that information.

I assume from the last lines of your post that you are being sarcastic. Things cannot be that bad for you as you threatened to leave once already back in 2016 but you stuck around anyway (good for you) but the SSN requirement is nothing new and not unique to this selling site either.

I would trust Ebay encrypted storage much more than whatever my local dentist is using but they need your SSN as well.

Law of course!!! This Law that is so twisted for the richer in America!! Get a penny more for the richer people from penny sellers ? So sad for decent sellers who try to survive with more stupidity!!

This is really something you need to take up with the federal government. Your gripe has nothing to do with eBay. The government wants its piece of the pie and eBay has to comply or put itself at risk of being found liable of tax fraud. There's nothing stupid about it and it has nothing to do with "the richer".

You might be amazed at who has your social security number already. Ebay is probably the least one to worry about.

I've found trying to survive with more stupidity to be more frustrating than sad, actually.

yes, unless you have lived your whole life in a cave you ss number and much more is almost certainly already compromised, in my opinion the most untrustworthy holders of ss numbers is government agencies.

That's certainly true these days. 😵💫

Everyone's SSAN was recently "questionably" accessed, and seems not limited to a "read only"

It is required by law, as passed by Congress.
What that all means for sellers ?
It means that when asked, they must provide their SSN or taxpayer ID to eBay's Managed Payments in order to sell here.
Who is in charge of your life now?
Hopefully you are in control. Hopefully you read the terms of eBay Managed Payments. Hopefully you noticed that you agreed to provide your SSN or taxpayer ID. Hopefully you declined to use eBay if you disagreed with the law.
"Provide us with all information which we may require for purposes that include: verifying your identity, complying with applicable laws and regulations such as anti-money laundering and sanctions screening obligations, allowing us to manage settlements of your transaction proceeds, and assessing fraud and risk. If you are an individual, this information may include, without limitation, your full name, address, phone number, date of birth, taxpayer identification number"
https://pages.ebay.com/payment/2.0/terms.html
How can you trust ?
You take it on faith. Just as you take it on faith that unelected, unappointed, un-vetted 20-something former hackers working for DOGE didn't already get it during the two weeks they had administrative access to the Treasury Department data systems.

I was going to make a joke that ebay is like a group of shady thugs waiting for your number but they did hire shady thugs. 🤣🤣🤣

It's not all of a sudden, they've been asking for SSN for years now.
It's pretty simple, if you want to get paid, provided it, if you don't, don't.
