Warning from eBay

I had a buyer ask me to cal him in his first message sent. I told him that's against the rules and didn't respond after that.

2 weeks later I get a warning from eBay... here's the screenshot.

If another memeber decides to do this will I get another warning or possibly a ban for something I didn't do?

Recently a seller posted who had gotten a warning.  He had a potential buyer contact him through ebay messages asking him his personal contact info including his phone number, etc. saying he "wanted to know who he was buying from".

Instead of ignoring or saying "NO" the seller answered "I can answer your questions here".  Then he wondered why he got the warning.  The potential buyer wasn't asking questions about the item~~he was asking personal contact questions & the seller told him he could answer his questions.

Good points, @kattinsanity  I don't know that that was the seller's intentions but it can certainly be interpreted as that.  Seller may have meant item questions and overlooked the context.  The warning says, giving out contact info (email addresses) and having contact info in listings  (blatant or subtle, I believe)

Re: Warning from eBay

I believe it was this thread where it was brought up before that a poster has her & her husbands 1st and last names posted in their listings.  I looked at one listing and it sure does have their names along with  a few "comments" of exactly where their cottage is that they live in.  All I'd have to do is google it or call info and get their phone number to make a deal off ebay.  Since this seller sells high $$ (compared to mine anyway) items I would think ebay would catch onto it sooner or later??  I'm not knocking this seller nor am I going to make any reports or anything but I would think this seller would know better than to do that???

I, for one, will sleep much better knowing that ebay applies the same high standards of fairness and integrity in regards to enforcing the rules of buyer/seller communication (with no double speak), as they do in moderating these boards.

It doesn't get any better than this, really.

'Make it clear to the buyer you won't take the item off of ebay'

at the same time 'don't respond to the buyer'.

@honestabe411

The only way that I have found to fight this sort of thing is to go into your seller settings and block buyers from asking questions. Of course, this does not help after they pay and message you about unallowed things.

A former customer wrote me about wanting a product at a particular price. That resulted in a warning about messages being blocked and selling outside. At this point, I believe deleting any such message upon delivery of the message is the only option available. Certain things such as mention of price etc. alerts the bot to go into action.

This is not right, we are being slapped for following the rules. They need to follow their own rules. They don't give me credit for all of my sales so I am on the edge of losing TRS. I wish I could send out warnings to them!

Re: Warning from eBay

I got threatened when someone offered a lower price on the first day of an auction and I responded that I might consider it later in the auction period. I have concluded that computers look for key words, and no human reviews the messages before a threatening email is sent. I have also decided that I will not respond to unsolicited offers - and that includes any offers under Ebay's new system to automatically solicit "best offers" on my behalf and without my consent.

@castlemagicmemories

Yep.   I think the ebay hierarchy belongs in Washington DC ( if that's not where they're from already).

Isn't it contradictory that Brian says "If you are not soliciting or RESPONDING TO off ebay requests~~" & "If a buyer emails you to take the item off ebay YOU SHOULD MAKE IT CLEAR YOU WILL NOT DO THAT"?  He is saying you should NOT RESPOND to these requests yet says you need to MAKE IY CLEAR to the buyer that you won't do that.  How can you do that if you don't respond?

You have a point.  Taking a stab at what he means, I am not in his head, but possibly he means responding in the sense that you give out your email address, which is against policy, or specifically say, yes, I will do that (anything that indicates acceptance of taking it off ebay).

Thus to respond, I won't do that, while it IS a response, that is an acceptable response to Ebay.  It clearly indicates you are NOT open to that.

Just my thoughts.

@Anonymous

Can you pass this on to Brian Burke for clarification, please?  I don't want to put words in his mouth or interpret his meaning incorrectly.  Thank you so much, Trinton!

@castlemagicmemories @kattinsanity If a buyer emails you with a solicitation to take the sale off eBay, you should respond that you only complete transactions on eBay. Make sure no contact information is included in your response. When a customer support agent reviews the email exchange it will be clear only the buyer was in violation.

And, although we use technology to look for violations, before any action is taken a human will review. None of you should worry about us taking automated action against your account for these violations.

Thanks for selling on eBay!

Brian

Re: Warning from eBay

Brian thank you so much - as you can see from the threads there was some confusion and theories run rampant as I said at chat - hopefully people will come back to read the thread and see your post!
