Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

--Final Update, October 28--

The category changes announced in our Fall Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all of these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete the post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that may help is located in the Seller Hub under Listing>Active. There is a drop-down box labeled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here.

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. Outside of that, please share suggestions as to changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

---Update as of October 19th---

We apologize for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalize category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on February 22, 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.

  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewelry & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewelry. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Update as of October 14th---
The work continues on this move and is progressing according to plan. We are on track and anticipate all category changes for your listings to be complete by end of day tomorrow (10.15). Thank you for your patience while our teams implement these changes.

---Update as of October 13th---

We continue to work through this change and thank you for your patience as our teams work through it. We wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why are Gallery Plus fees being charged for items that were previously free?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including Gallery Plus, subtitles, and insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option is grayed out and I can’t select it. When will the issue be resolved?

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option issue resulted from the category changes update and has been resolved. eBay Standard Envelope is now available in applicable categories if your item meets the established criteria.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but can they take up to a week (i.e., through Oct. 19). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by Feb 22, 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out that has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting October 12th, you’ll see updates to the following categories. Learn more about category changes →

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required February 22, 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I don't get all of these item specifics. Are they trying to ruin us all? After all, it was we, the sellers, who made eBay what it is.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

WHY in the world would you choose to remove specific details and categories?  Giving the buyer LESS information is never a good idea. In all my trainings, Ebay always asks us to include as much info as possible. Why go backwards with less information? I don't understand. This will result in people going to other platforms to buy and sell. It will tank the jewelry sellers like me. Please reconsider and allow us to be the detailed, honest jewelers we are.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Another TERRIBLE change that WILL cost eBay sellers without a doubt.  This is why so many sellers and buyers are going to other sites. They only care about MONEY and not the sellers.

How as well are buyers going to find our items when all their saved searches in these categories are pretty much gone? eBay didn't tell the buyers about the changes so they may just decide eBay doesn't care about them either and shop elsewhere.  This is what you get when the only guy who will take the CEO spot (due to pending federal charges against ex-eBay employees) is the Wal-Mart guy who ruined and killed the Nook! Wal-Mart 2.0 is all I can say.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Ebay postcard sellers, if ebay doesn't fix this mess there are at least two other postcard sites that you should explore.  Hippostcard.com which currently has over 6 million postcard listings (appropriately placed in subcategories) and Delcampe.net which has over 58 million postcard listings (also appropriately placed in subcategories).   I already have a hippostcard account and will be looking at reactivating my delcampe account.  There are also several facebook postcard user groups that permit selling, and not to mention facebook market place, where I am seeing more and more postcard listings.     I think ebay has made it very clear that they do not care about us as sellers.  If they did, they would have consulted experts in the various collectible categories.  No postcard seller in the history of selling postcards has called the two main categories anything other than VIEW postcards and TOPIC postcards, with appropriate subcategories therein.

In my almost 24 years of selling postcards on this site, and now with over 30,000 postcard listings on the site, I have never been more **bleep** off at ebay than I am right now.  I have always championed this site when I talk to people about selling on this platform.  I would tirelessly defend this site when I would talk to other postcard sellers at in-person postcard shows who quit selling because they remember the wild west days from 20 years ago.    You've lost me as an advocate.

OK, I missed a few clicks at the end.  Try this:

eBay Help->Selling->Contact us->Fees & Billing-> Fee Credit-> Chat with an automated assistant or contact an agent

Go to the Help box and scroll down.  Click Contact an agent

Sometimes you have to enter your phone number here.  Then click the new Contact an agent

You are told the estimated wait time.

Uh, I still missed a Click near the end - Sorry.

When you go to the Help box and scroll down, click See More, then click Contact an agent.

eBay, please list Customer Support contact phone number(s).

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I have just ended all my listings. Hopefully by next week things will have settled down.

Got charged the gallery pic $1.00 fee for a relist in the P&G category.

All draft listings gone...Templates messed up but, as an experiment, I did make a new listing and there was no charge for the gallery pic (will see if it shows up later)

Buckle up folks!!!!

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Sales are tanking, my boss' account who specializes in jewelry's sales dropped off a cliff, so did my boyfriend who only sold things he sent offers out on today- this is ridiculous, we sell vintage and unique pre-owned items, not mass produced fake silver from China and India!!! Buyers don't want more mass produced items that are obviously faked!

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I have been purchasing HO model trains on ebay for many years.  For one of my favorite searches that I do often, I scan about 25 pages or 4000+ listings.   Now there is no searchable category for HO and I will not review all the listings in other model scales.  So I added " + HO" to my title search for the new "model trains" category and find I only have about 5 pages of listings.  This is a great time and money saver for me since I now miss 75% of the items I might have purchased.

And what about my Thanksgiving postcards with a "turkey" in the title being made in Turkey. Same with New Jersey state, automatically suggest made in Jersey. OR a postcard with post office in the title automatically suggest "Posted".

The listing page now is so complicated, it takes me for ever to enter information and making sure wrong specifics are not included.

So, now the postcard main category is Collectibles > Postcards and supplies"???? Why supplies?

Antique and vintage postcards have nothing to do with supplies. Am I missing something.

Book called "Blood Relatives" updated automagically by eBay to "Relatives" . Used to be able to put in the ISBN for books. Now that is 50/50 it will work. Colors routinely get changed when eBay either doesn't recognize them or chooses to randomly move them to new field.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

Why did you get rid of the sub categories for collectibles antiques and the item specifics. How are people supposed to find them? The more categories and sub categories the better and the fewer stupid, redundant, ridiculous, useless and misleading item specifics the better.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I went to my other account and listed a few postcards using Sell similar.  Most of the old item specifics had Remove next to them and they didn't have the drop-down list of selections.  When I went to update one of my new listings, I saw all the new Item specifics, many of which had little or nothing to do with postcards and took up lots and lots of screen space with many weird selections related to other Collectibles categories.  I'm so discouraged I'm taking advice given above and not listing for a week.

Also the $1.00 Gallery plus fees keep rolling in, though the Collectibles category does NOT have a Gallery plus fee.  So far I've called Customer Service twice and had 7 Gallery plus fees reversed, but there are now 3 more and growing.  eBay has made NO announcement about this glitch.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

This SUCKS! I cannot see any of my almost 1,000 listings...NOT HAPPY! Called Ebay before I saw this to try to find out what is going on and the guy said give me 2 minutes to get you to a tech specialist....well......52 minutes later, I finally hung up with no answer or anyone coming to the phone to say please keep holding...It's hard enough to get in touch with Ebay and more frustrating when they DON'T ANSWER!!! Ebay keeps making changes, and THEY AREN'T FOR THE BETTER.
