I answer all inquires sometimes within minutes and at most within 24 hours, but when the interested party replies with "thanks" and the conversation is over is it important to go to the listing page and mark question answered immediately? Usually, I let it go until they pile-up. Does my habit affect any hidden? metrics? Occasionally, in the past as a shopper, ebay would tell you how quickly the seller responds to questions... haven't seen that in awhile though.

No.

No.

Still exists. On listing on web, below description, in box with seller info. Mine still says "responds within 24 hours" or something like that even though most of my messages end up with buyer having last word like "thanks." An eBay rep told us eBay is looking at response time to buyer's first message, not follow up messages @trip98 .

How you handle the questions is a personal preference. No metrics involved.

Amazon has such a metric and they give you a place to click, no response needed.
ebay does not have such a metric

I have seen a rating for how quickly a seller ships a paid item, but not for response speed. I may just be looking in the wrong place.
On the other hand, I have also seen that manually marking a question as Answered (if necessary) does not seem to stick, and on later days I'll notice that the number of supposedly unanswered questions has now come back again. I finally just stopped using the Mark as Answered function as it didn't seem to be working properly anyway.
I do answer questions as soon as they come in, but if the buyer responds again with "Thanks" or similar, I just let the acknowledgement go.

Suppose it could affect the "how quickly the seller responds" (if it still exists), but I don't wait for a "pile-up".
1) It is so simple to mark as read. (2-3 mouse clicks on a PC) (app on mobile may be different)
2) I don't want to see that I have "unanswered" questions.

If you move the "thanks" reply to your "Deleted" folder, the "unanswered question" goes away.

I don't think it affects metrics after you've answered it no matter how long it stays up.

I'm going to go counter to what everyone else says. Not b/c I know for sure, but b/c we all know eBay keeps track at least in a general way of how long it takes you to respond & I know that none of know what 256 items the search engine's algorithms use to determine placement, therefore I figure just in case this is one of them, I'd just as soon mark it done as quickly as possible. After all, it just takes a second.
In other words IDK for sure that it helps me, but I DO know that it doesn't hurt me, so I'll take any advantage I can get 😊
