I bought an item and got a tracking number. I noticed that another buyer said that he also got a number and the guy never took it to the post office. Seems that is also my story. Since I am also a seller, I get frustrated with sellers like this. Is this an unusual practice?

Are you saying that another buyer also has the same issue with this seller?
Regardless of that, I am sure that, as an experienced seller here, you know exactly what to do if/when you haven't received your item by a few days past its estimated delivery date.

I'm not quite understanding what your issue is. What does the other buyer's issue have to do with you? I've seen dozens of people post things that may be similar to each others but have no connection whatsoever.
If you received a tracking number and upon checking it still shows as awaiting receipt by the PO it might only be that the PO has yet to scan the item. I would wait until the estimated delivery window has passed before worry would get me running to check my BP.

Maybe they have a long handling/shipping time?
Or they just did not get an acceptance scan?
What does the tracking history look like?
I don't know about how usual it is, but speaking for myself, I always get an acceptance or pick up scan within my handling/shipping time, which is 1 day.
If you don't receive within the estimated delivery time frame, open an item not rec'd case.
Good Luck!

Tracking numbers are assigned when the mailing label is printed. The assignment of a tracking has nothing to do with whether the package gets taken to the post office (or otherwise moves along its way).
Check your tracking history to see if and when USPS receives the package. Even then, it's certainly not unheard of for USPS to miss an acceptance scan, so keep watching the tracking history for movement of the package.
As a seller, I'm sure you already know there is no advantage for a seller to print a label and provide a tracking number for a package that never actually enters the USPS system.
If the package doesn't arrive, file an INR. Just having a tracking number doesn't protect the seller if there's been no delivery scan.

I'm sure some sellers aren't as timely as others in shipping their items, but who knows how often this happens? As a seller yourself, I'm sure you know buyers are covered by the ebay money guarantee, so there is really no need to worry.

It's unlikely a seller is going to purchase a shipping label with a tracking number and then not ship the item . I suppose it could happen but its still unlikely . Your seller may just be slow to ship . Another theory might be is your package missed the first acceptance scan . If that's the case then there probably won't be any further progress scans until the actual delivery . Have you tried contacting the seller ? Tulips

Is it the same tracking number you got that the other person have? Your lines do not add up on what you are trying to say there. Re read what you wrote.
I don't believe the OP meant to say that they and another buyer had the SAME tracking number . They both had different tracking numbers but no progress on either . Tulips

It has been a week since I purchased the item and it only shows a tracking number not being accepted at the post office. A complaint by another buyer reported that he got a tracking number , but it was never received by the post office. I wanted the item and I know I will get my money back whenever Ebay says I can. I did email the seller and he won't respond. I guess I was thinking that he is delaying refunds by giving a tracking number , but, since I take my items to the PO and only get a tracking number after I have paid. I don't really understand how you get a tracking number and is he up to something I don't understand.

When you purchase labels through eBay you get an immediate tracking number. It will only update once delivered to the post office.

Thanks for that info. So ebay doesn't charge him until it goes to the PO? He hasn't paid for anything yet to ship it?

If there is a USPS tracking number that shows it is active but not moving, the seller has paid for the label. If you don't receive it, you can open a not received claim.

Were you supplied with an approximately delivery date when you paid for the item. If that date is past, you can open a not received claim and eBay will verify that. It sometimes takes a little while to get the refund, but you will be covered.

I have always wondered whether some sellers would willing to pay for a label in order to change an "out of stock" defect into an "item not received".
