These fees are insane!

Ebay has a lot of nerve charging these higher fees. I know I am preaching to choir about this. Ebay needs a good competition to humble them. I am personally not going to list anything new on here. I have better luck on Mercari and they only charge like %10.

The fees are the fees...........if your item selling price doesn't support them, it only makes sense to list them in a cheaper place.........which may or may not have the number of sales Ebay does.....

The way to "beat" fees is to buy smarter.......it's always been said, you make the money on the item cost when you buy......

If you can do better elsewhere ... go elsewhere.

Threads like this occasionally pop back up after months or years go by. And, inevitably, the OP did not take their ball and go home and is still selling on eBay.

I wouldn't dare use a competitor, in the end they are all bad.   eBay is still the place to rock-----high fees and all.

not here to argue....but for the exposure, the fees are pretty good.....

The optional add-ons can get expensive, but that is completely dependent on your advertising/marketing/sourcing budget.

I have cross listing with one line of products. ebay outsells etsy/mercari and poshmark at least 4-1 without options.......

"...ebay needs a good competition to humble them..."

until someone says "look on (insert competitor here) to see what they sell for" I will stick with ebay.....

@endbossgames It's 2025. More selling options than ever. List wherever you want. ebay works better for some sellers than others.

Ebay needs a good competition to humble them

Back in the day, two companies with very deep pockets - Amazon and Yahoo - tried to create auction sites to compete with eBay and failed. "Good competition" requires attracting both buyers and sellers.

There are lots of options and lots of competition out there, but much of it is specialized and most of the low-cost options rely on local face-to-face meetings. Etsy seems to have come the closest, but a rough check of the math shows they would cost about the same as eBay once the listing fees are taken into account (essentially 5 cents per listing per month)

Mercari is charging the BUYER the 3% 'processing fee'. (Good luck with that, they'll either change it back or go out of business). 10% plus 3% is the same 13% charged here (rounded figures).

I'm just thrilled to have a place to make some money to supplement my social security. It gives me purpose,  as well.

We all must look at what works for us personally. I am excited with my new adventure.

Here to a profitable year for us all!!!

Mercari is unlikely to continue its US site much longer. The fee shift failed to increase the traffic and sales.

For whatever reason, their appeal is strong outside the US and not here. I find nothing there which I would buy, but I am old. I see Ebay as one of many alternative sites to buy the type of merchandise offered there. Somebody has to be an also ran.

Etsy has its own problems. I sold on Etsy Vintage and found it to be the worst internet venue I sold on in close to 30 years of internet selling.

Etsy has been sort of going sideways for years, and its management is trying as best they can to spur some real growth.

If you cannot tolerate Ebay fees, you are selling the wrong products for Ebay.

When Ebay introduced lots of free listings and the stores, it cleared its greatest barrier to the listing fee problem. For years seller sell though rate was too low to justify the listing fees for the number of listings required to profit. Over time they reduced their dependence on the listing fees and made it possible for sellers with some business skills to succeed.

Sellers can predict what margins they need to make a profit, something which was impossible when there were fees on every listing because no one could forecast sales. Many sellers, myself included, cannot forecast how long it will take to sell any given product.

"eBay needs a good competition to humble them."

Pretty sure eBay's not the only team in the league.

And you are, of course, free to list here or not, whichever works for your business model.

Do us a favor -- return some time in the future and let us know which site works for you and offers as much exposure.  TIA.

"I am personally not going to list anything new on here."

So you're going to let your current 90 eBay listings run their course?

They're all Buy-It-Now format, so you wouldn't be penalized by eBay in any way if you end them now.
If they sell on eBay, you'll still have to pay eBay's insane fees.
What will that say about you ??

You listed a site you prefer, so isn't Mercari "competition"?  There are several sites out there that Ebay competes with.  Some are have less expensive selling fees and some are more.  Some have good traffic, some don't.

You just need to decide what is best for you and do that.  Announcing it here serves no purpose unless you are trying to get other sellers to join you, not sure that is going to happen just because you are leaving.
