Seems like so many of us are in the same boat.....

I had never thought that the new unified listing flow could be causing issues with search but  anything is possible. I did run into the same issue- I have never been able to add a upc- just NO MATCH FOUND. Obviously that can effect search if none of our newer listings have upc added.  Also you may be correct that the legacy search and the new code are not meshing with item specifics- that could be a huge part of the problem...... although it does not explain the drop in sales on the 4000 older listings we have..

The google issue is probably a real issue as well but it is ebay's job as a company to address and adapt to changes like that- literally what they are supposed to do.

Algorithm changes to allow more promoted listings is probably not helping either

For sure it is a complicated situation and multi-faceted but it is a REAL PROBLEM that needs to be figured out and fixed- Absolutely nobody is winning in this situation- sellers are struggling, buyers are being frustrated and ebay is loosing revenue which is causing them to raise fees to make up for it which is causing less people to want to sell here----- its the giant spiral downward that needs to stop and ebay has to stop it because they are the cause of it.

To be honest, UPC field is worthless, no one searches via UPC on ebay cause so many times no results will come up that is accurate, on the other side that, for those that do come up and are accurate the amount of people search via UPC is pretty low i believe. My stuff usually does not have UPC's - vinyl I deal in I intentionally avoid with UPC's - hard to understand for many I guess if you not into what i deal - but most underground record labels that deal in metal frown upon UPC's - it's a symbol and status of commercialism which the real genre has always fought against - that is why what I deal the titles are so limited made. The only labels that use them are generally the larger more commercialized labels, which I rarely deal with or carry not because of what the titles are, but because they produce to much and flood the market with too many copies and repress and repress and repress and repress things to absolute death. In many cases, by the time those labels pick up a band and start repressing their older albums the only version wanted by collectors is the original first pressing...anything after, especially on larger labels most collectors ignore.

All that is based off what I deal in, everyday common items have UPC's but then a lot of times when enter them in the listing ebay rejects them, not all of course, but many. It took over a year for ebay to allow UPC for a book I have, suddenly it just allowed it, prior to that I only had the UPC in the description.

Anyways, yeah, it's all on ebays side of the spectrum, that is why I said I'm tinkering and experimenting recording results daily to try and bring at least some sales back...but i'm (we are) limited to what we can actually do on our side with listings PL campaigns etc... it's up to ebay to fix algorithms, site development issues, tools etc... but I completely agree with you on the downfall!

Heat wave coupled with nuclear fearmongering. It will be gone soon, but you have to learn to live with less, which always helps.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

I've had some time on my hands due to the heat keeping me indoors so I decided to examine my sales stats and views more closely for the second quarter for all four of my accounts.  To my surprise I had only one sale total on a Sunday since April.  Sunday used to be my best day for sales.  I've always ended the occasional auction on Sunday, and knew that none of my auctions had sold in Q2, but to have only one buy it now sale on a Sunday is beyond strange.

I list 5-10 items every day on each account and end all listings on Day 30,  but suddenly in May my traffic pattern changed with little traffic on the weekends.  Plus most listings now do not even get a view for the first 10 days.  Since I do not play the promoted listing game, I have to wonder if there is a delay in indexing and some search manipulation when it comes to non-promoted listings as well as higher priced items getting a bump in search.   Out of 8 total sales in August only one was less than $17 plus shipping -  it has always been the other way around.

I've been around long enough to know that sales and traffic patterns occasionally fluctuate or change, but there are too many deviations from the post recession norm going on recently to not suspect some sort of increased search manipulation on eBay's part.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

@kathieskorner   Most experienced Sellers know the patterns & trends of Selling in their categories ... you are one more who noticed the recent drop is not normal for what you do.  I too have posted that GTC listings seem to be invisible until near the end of their listing cycle.

I too like Auctions ending on Weekends and Sunday typically has the most traffic if the Impressions chart on this PLS Campaign is accurate ... the Peak days each week is Sunday ... (although Impressions are 20,000 (+/-) what they were before 2022).

Prior to 2022 a typical Monday was 15-25 packages being shipped.  This year those days are few and far between ... so much so that I have started calling it Single Digit Sunday because I am shipping fewer then 10 packages ... this week it looks like I just might have more then 10 packages BUT the sales were not all organic, several are from Offers I sent so that skews the data a bit.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

@kathieskorner

Realistically by definition a search engine is a form a manipulation- someone has to program the algorithms what to show on any given search.  The best search will show the best and most relevant matches of items to search query. We no longer have that here at ebay. They manipulate based on hundreds of differing metrics from shipping time, location, cookies on computers, they actively suppress listings from areas of natural disasters at times, promoted listings, seller metrics, rolling location visibility, order of the keywords you type, categories, basically if you can think of it they are manipulating it by a percentage of value to the equation.

They tinker with this all the time and like you said- sellers can notice the day and time that they change these algorithms.    You mentioned that your sales switched from weekends to weekdays- that is manipulation of your account or your category or something in search. years of sales history do not just flip opposite over night.

We see sales come in batches of 1 hour blocks and all from one state at a time for a day or so- then switches to a different state. Funny, this week I have sold a bunch of random things to PA, my home state.  I can go 10 months without selling to PA. it is bizarre. Natural sales should (AND USED TO) spread out evenly over all 50 states (considering population of course), and you would not expect to sell as many bathing suits to North Dakota as you would Florida  obviously, but they would not come in batches like they do.

This funk in sales is 100% something that ebay screwed up in their recent changes- its not us.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

If you have 100% proof of your above statement...... I would like to have it......as a seller with depressed listings....I am considering legal action against ebay.

Since they sell here in Florida I am considering a small claims court action against them.

Ebay is acting in bad faith and way beyond their seller terms and conditions.

The "shadow banning" you are referring to I cannot find anywhere in the buyer terms and condtions.

Please let me know

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

I'm sure they're terms and conditions are iron clad. They actually stated that due to varying conditions your listing may not show up at all. That pretty much covers them in however they choose to manipulate the results. To be fair I do not actually think eBay is trying to hide anything listings. Be that would just be plain stupid. I think it's just an unopened consequence of bad programming and insight into how the search works. They think they are using AI to help you find the best possible match while in reality, they are just not showing you the most relevant results. I truly think they just are not really that good at what they do there. eBay is a trial and error company. Not a visionary company. That is why they are always behind the trends and catching up. If they would just work on making the platform function we would all be better off.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

Save your money - eBay's legal team is far superior to their IT department and CEO.

On the bright side I won't have to go out into the Florida heat once again on a Monday - nothing to ship ....

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

I only list free listings. I would never pay for a store here since views have been going down hill rapidly for a long time. I hardly have any sales now and am surprised when I get one which is the exact opposite from how it used to be a long time ago. And before anyone says it is the items or prices of my items, they are selling quite well on another site. I really do not know what has happened to Ebay, but it is really too bad since it used to be good at one time. I hope they get their act together again some day.

Re: Sudden drop in sales May 2022

Been several months since May and wish I had found this conversation back in May. I have 2 items that get promoted and since May sales have dropped off from selling 20 items in a month to almost none. Not sure if this is the place to ask about the update anymore or if I should contact a Team leader. I will continue to search and contact other places if I find the right place/person.
