Spam messages asking for freebies

I started getting these messages about 2 months ago. They are all pretty much the same sentence structure but with different accounts... introducing themselves, mentioning who they are in twitter, facebook, etc. They say they make reviews, but there are hardly any when I look them up.

They are all in Morocco. And they all ask me for free stuff. Has anyone else noticed a sudden appearance of these spam messages too?

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

My email account has a spam filter with settings from 1 to 10, where 10 is a Fortress Steep and Mighty. So, no, I never see junk like this. You might want to just up your filter.

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

It's not thru email... they are legitimate ebay messages from legitimate ebay members. So I guess it's not spam in the truest sense depending on your definition of the word.

However, all of the different members are 1 day old zero feedback rating accounts. I got like over a dozen of these messages in the last 2-3 months from morocco accounts and one from egypt earlier today.

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

Oh, it sounds like spam to me. I haven't gotten them, but from what you say it smells like and tastes like it.

If messages still had that report link, I'd suggest reporting them. I'm sure eBay does not consider that an appropriate use of their message system.

A lot of these messages are 2-3 level deep phishing messages that will eventually get you to click on a link containing the hostile code.

Can you still forward the messages to spam@ebay.com?

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

They are scammers trying to get free items - just delete.  Report first if you feel like it, but it won't do any good.

Exactly.  On either my own email or ebay's, I do not open unsolicited emails, same as with telephone calls from numbers I do not recognize.

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

I got one a few weeks ago.  Said she did makeup reviews on youtube and would refer the viewers back to me.  She referred to a youtube account that hadn't published a review video in over a year.  She also didn't have all her facts straight as to the youtube video publisher.  Luckily, I sniffed these facts out in my exchange with her and figured out it was a scam without sending any item for her to "sample and review".  Sneaky folks.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Re: Spam messages asking for freebies

This used to be big on the river since reviews on that site help with search placement. It's still going on to some extent, but it's mostly died down since the river changed their review policy and started purging all of the freebie reviews that weren't part of their vine program and banned a bunch of users accounts from reviewing.

Product reviews on eBay aren't much of a thing yet, so buying reviews with free product doesn't make much sense. Even if it did make sense for some sellers I still say ignore these solicitations. People just want free stuff but fake reviews are never a good thing.

To clarify, they are standard messages within the eBay site from member to member. They aren't PMs within this board.

@gotta-get-stuff Not sure if you can still send to spam@ebay. And even if you can, not sure if these be classified as legitimate spam.

@emerald40 I wish I can delete them without opening. But they just show up as generic messages with subject line "message from member". So I'd have to click into them first in order to know what the member wants.

Its not much of a problem now, I just delete them. Just wondering if others are getting the same thing and if these messages are on the rise. I've never gotten these messages in my 15 years here until recently. It's just an annoyance now.

Why have any exchange at all?
