Hi
I am selling a lot of stuff accumulated through the years, I am not a business. I was happy to just get things out of my house, I really have too many things.
A while ago I inquired how to stay with paypal because I did not want to give my SS# to ebay. Here is what I was told: Thank you so much for your patience. What I will do here then is to send your account information to so that you will not be transitioned for the managed payments to keep using PayPal.
Then I received an new ebay mail telling me if I do not register I will not be able to make new sell. I contacted ebay through chatand this is what I was told:
Unfortunately this will be the new process for selling items on eBay. We will now permanently cut ties with PayPal. Your listing abilities will be restricted if you will not be opted in to Manage Payments.
Im sorry but that is correct , you can only continue using Paypal if you are listing items under categories such as Coins & paper money, gift cards & coupons, ebay motors other than that there is no option to opt out.
So can any one tell why those people do not have to expose their SS#.
Thank you
does any one knows why some sells can still happen with paypal

EBay's new payment cannot process payments for those categories yet. Once they work out the issues with those categories they will be included.

First cs agent was wrong.
EBay will no longer be using paypal to process payment. They have been transitioning sellers to the new system over the last 2 years. Not all have been moved yet but once your turn comes you either follow thru or stop selling
The Irs requires ebay get you ssn# to report income over certain limits set by your state and the feds.Paypal required it to,You can apply for a ein number (its free)to avoid sharing you ss#

I understand your reluctance to give out your SSN, it is counterintuitive to what we all have always been taught and told...to NEVER give that out. Now, the government requires all payment facilitators to have their clients (us) SSN & DOB on hand. All payment facilitators are also required by law to hand out form 1099's at the end of the year if you pass so many amts or $ in sales...from what I understand from these boards, that amount can also vary from state to state in thresholds.
I too was very reluctant to do this until I talked to some well experienced people here and decided to go ahead with MP. We in the USA do not have a choice in the matter...eBay's contract with PayPal has basically ended for sellers (buyers can still use PP for payments). Overseas sellers can still use PayPal to accept payments...a least for the time being, I am not sure if they will ever have to convert. I know it seems unfair but that it the way it is and they (eBay) is not going back.
I spoke with @mam98031 in great lengths and she managed to put my mind at some ease in regards to the whole SSN thing and I was one of those hell no way - giving out my SSN people. She might be able to help you with your concerns if you still have any. Just continue talking to us and maybe you will be able to find some resolve.

I was supposed to sign up for managed payments by Aug. 31, 2020, and have not. Around the middle of November, they restricted my ability to list new items or revise old ones. The existing items I had before the restriction are still up, and I get some sales from them still (with instant paypal payment). I can still adjust prices using promotions manager (putting things on sale). I'm sure they'll go soon as well.

As mentioned in an earlier post, sellers of certain categories of items are not being enrolled in Managed Payments at this time, but they will be. They will be required to provide their identification number before their enrollment can be completed, too.
By way of explanation, eBay is required by the federal government to obtain an identification number for all who enroll in the Managed Payments program.
If you don't enroll in eBay's Managed Payments program because you don't want to give them an identification number, that's your choice, but they are required by federal law to obtain an identification number for everyone who enrolls.

@vieuxjoyaux to further clarify for you, there are many of us on here who also are not a business. We also sell items from our house. We also sell to declutter and reorganize our homes. There is no requirement to be a business in order to continue to sell on eBay. One has nothing to do with the other. Best of luck to you....

I've asked a number of times for someone to identify this law ebay is supposedly breaking by not currently having my SSN.
Nobody has been able to produce what law is supposedly being broken. Are you able to identify the law you mentioned? Thank you.

As a payment processor, eBay must provide you (and the IRS) with a Form 1099-K if you pass the required thresholds. The federal thresholds are 200 transactions and $20,000, but several states have set limits as low as $600.

I have no worries about taxes or anything else.
For info A company does not need your full SS# the last 4 digit with your other info Address , etc... is sufficient.
My question other wise was why are some people selling Coins & paper money, gift cards & coupons, ebay motors do not have to comply?

It's been repeatedly said that 'Federal law requires' eBay to harvest SSN for ALL SELLERS. most of which are well below that 20k threshold.
I'm rather certain these claims are nothing but a canard, as nobody has been able to produce this magical law.
What state requires SSN harvesting for sellers at the $600 level? Specifically which law in that state?
Tossing around claims about laws is a pet peeve of mine. Better words might be compliance, guidance or 'in an effort to protect themselves against' money laundering, and so on.
There's plenty of stuff I do to keep my records straight that aren't 'required by federal law'.

Ebay is not a financial institution. My issue is not that I disagree with following guidelines, but I am taking issue with the claim that ebay is 'required by federal law' to harvest every single seller's SSN.

I'm not sure if you're intentionally trying to be difficult or if you didn't click on the first two links I posted:

Money transmitters are classified as MSBs (money services businesses) and therefore fall under the purview of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and must comply with Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Act requirements applicable to the vast majority of financial institutions.

Look, just because you don't want these laws to apply to eBay doesn't mean they don't.

FINE then, Adyen (in the background) is transferring funds and reporting to respective revenue services.
It's not how you want it, we know. But that's what it is.
